when does a hobby become an addiction???!!!!??!!!??!!!
:smiley-laughing: I don't know, but I'm sure a number of us are addicted.
I vowed that I would not start spending my money on stock while I still have plenty of scenic work to do, it's taken alot of self control up until now, I have £45 in my sky rocket right now and I was literally having to talk myself out of popping down gaugmaster today and buying two more seacows for my engineers rake!!!
i think i'm more into collecting than modelling!
i still have loads of work to do on my layout...
i should try not to buy anymore rolling stock for at least 6 months....
tim
You can never have too much rolling stock. Well that's what I tell the wife anyway.
Seriously I try not to buy too much stock but when I see bargains on Ebay for a couple fo quid, what am I supposed to do? Leave them for someone else? Not likely.
I have 76 freight wagons at the moment and when they are on the layout it looks empty. So I may require some more. :smiley-laughing:
Alex
i don't even like class 150s, PGA hoppers, TEA tanks, or queen mary brake vans.... but as they fit my chosen era i find myself wanting them....
i did have a very specific list of rolling stock i was collecting... think i need to return to the list and show restraint!!!! i blame ebay and this forum!!! hahahaha
i'm going to book into a rehab centre.....
tim
I look on ebay but the prices seem stupid so end up leaving them my problem is the wagons i like seem to be the most expensive! wish i liked the small coal wagons :(.
My sidings are full but that doesn't stop me looking and trying to find bargins
Dave
Hi Guys;
Similar symptoms here......but;
I have taken a small dose of reality and filled a box with stuff I'll never use to shift on.
Let's put it this way, I'm unlikely to need 31s and 33s in SW Scotland (I will keep a yellow 31 and a pair of DRS 33s)...so NSE and anything green will have to go.
If I feel a little more brave in the future I may even thin out a few CJM repaints (early stuff)...37216 Great Eastern and 37350/D6700 spring to mind.
I though I had previously culled all my Farish printed Blue/Grey coaches...but no..I found a stray in a box there too.
Addictions can be overcome...but probably never cured!!!!

I'll still have far too much though
Guilty as charged !
If has a motor in it - i'll buy it.... What is it about locomotives ? :smiley-laughing:
I keep changing my mind, which doesn't help and when i do, everything will get sold to buy the stuff for my next 'big idea'.... ::) I reckon over the years i've spent THOUSANDS... but that's another thread !
when I started planning my layout, I decided that not only would I plan the track, but also the timetable, and so from that the lists of locos, carriages and freight wagons.
you know what they say about plans...........
also, you seem to have to buy stuff when it's available, or it ends up sold out and you can't get it again, at least that's the excuse I give SWMBO
so do I have too many locos ........ YES
so do I have too many carriages... YES
so do I have too much freight........YES
and do I really give a t**s..............NO !
I will run them all in time, and they give me relaxation and pleasure [no not that sort],
so under Rule 1, I am happy even if my plans didn't always work out.
thats just model railways, always something being produced that doesn't fit in, but if I just tweek this .........
I think you are addicted when like my best mate re-mortgaged his house and maxed out a credit card for $60,000 of which 99% was spent on model railway stuff.
The Guy is a Legend.
I'm definitely trying to downsize right now, narrow the era, remove a few things from the collection. Trouble is I've got a fair pile of non-relevant stuff I kit-built which is therefore not eligible for a quick exit, and some of the new stuff is really really nice...
I think however the Collet stock will have to go, along sadly with the full formation PCA rake that ran on the old layout as the Moorswater service, and most of the maroon Mark 1 coaches.
More for the 'for sale' section, but it does mean I'll actually have space to run stuff 8)

I must admit to spending an awfull lot not just on rolling stock but N Gauge In general. My latest big splash out was on the Bachfar kettle Tornado. I did nt need it, just wanted it and whom can refuse. I love e-bay but trouble is I always come away with something that again I have no use for, my latest aquisition being a rivarossi pacific engine for £19 under spares/repairs. I won auction and sent it to my local model railway shop whom got it working for £ 10
I think it is the hobby for me and apart from it being expensive I don't Want to be cured!
Addiction? Well my girlfriend would tell you I have an addiction - and all after seeing a picture on the Michael Portillo 'Great Railway Journey's'...
I saw a photo of a long rake of Colman's mustard box vans, in an article about the Colman's mustard factory in Norwich - as I model the East Anglia area, I decided to give that a go in N - so far I have 15 Peco Colman's trucks! :o I think I can still run more, but SWMBO says that 15 is enough for anyone! :'(
SO, when I found that Robbie's Rolling Stock do transfers for the 'Coal for Colman's' to fit the Peco 7 plank truck, I ordered enough for 12 trucks - and then 10 Peco kits! They are now on the modelling table in a bright yellow colour, just awaiting the transfers! (She thinks I am mad - but just lets me get on with it as she knows I am happy and quiet... )
Alan;
The addiction kicks in...are they Blue Riband maroon Mk1s???

I've gone a bit mad in the last month, bought eight locos, nine coaches, eight presflow wagons and I scored a rake of eleven mixed wagons this morning.I've had to delete everything in my watch list although I'd still like a blue Mallard, but with a bit of luck it'll be gone now.
Allan
Someone say blue Mallard?............. Where? :smiley-laughing:
I think it's safe to say i'm a little addicted. Just consulted my database of stock to find out the following:
Locos + Units - 93!
Coaches - 89!
Wagons - 173!
And is it enough? Of course not! after checking Bachmann's '60 Day List' there is at least 10 more coaches i'll be buying! And don't forget the Dapol Signals due soon....
I'll admit it doesn't help working in a shop that gets all the new stuff in very regularly, especially if something is on offer! I came home from work on Saturday with a Class 86 in NSE Livery as it was cheap, Tank would be so proud!

And a new in box Minitrix green one went for £137.00 a couple of days or so ago.
Allan
Nope they are old ones
When I started, especially with ebay, I was buying all sorts, not knowing enough about the market at the time, I'm a little more discerning now, honest ::). Although I have been baulking at the thought of spending up to $30 (plus shipping) for a B&O Railway Express Agency freight car recently, then I was looking through the boxes where my stuff has been stored for years and there was an old Con-Cor one that I had bought years ago, standard REA car but it'll do ;D

Hopefully if Dapol have got it right, a LNER blue Mallard WITH valences should be on the top of their list of A4's to be released... I'll buy at least 2 for starters !
And there goes the addiction... Just put my last tenner in the car and now i'm making promises to buy £250 worth of loco's ! :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing:
My workplace will be bombarded with parcels for me next week.
I have 7 locos, 9 weathered Presflos and 30 yards of streamline coming.
It's the bosses fault - he should never have given me that end of year bonus  ::)
I'm trying to be good at the moment, and keep my spending to essential tools and materials that I need to build the layout in the first place. Next on the list after that should be a replacement for the EZ Command so I can fiddle with CVs and start looking at controlling points. Buying any loco would really also need me to buy a DC controller (unless it's already chipped), and some more track for a test track.
But the Intarwebs, it has so many shinies...
Just looked at Hattons. They're selling a Dash 8 US diesel for £29, RRP £71. Don't need one as it's not in my preferred livery and it's in the 1990's.
But boy am I tempted.
Alex
you guys make my addiction seem mild.... so thanks hahahaha
