We have a lot of discussion on this forum about various locomotives and their availability (either steam, early diesel or current era).
One locomotive that I would dearly like is a Beattie Well Tank. Photo below if anyone isn't sure what they look like.

They are synonymous with the Wadebridge area of course and would be an ideal addition to my layout (and possibly others).
Does anyone know of any availability ?
If not, what are the possibilities for a 3D printed body on a chassis? The problem being the unusual 2-4-0 wheel arrangement. I know that talking to other modellers in my area that such a model would be well received.

Could the Dapol 14xx chassis be reversed somehow (he asked in total ignorance)?

I've wondered that too Mick (again, my technical knowledge and ability leaves me lacking).
I've seen it used in reverse on a director's loco/coach combo that's on here somewhere.
In theory, it's just a case of what size the innards take up and whether they'd fit into the new body shell. That and running it backwards (or feasibly reversing the wiring)

That's the sort of thing I'm thinking. My knowledge of whether or not it's possible is non existant so I'm happy, at this stage, to be guided by others.
Looking at mine, it looks like it could be feasible. The can motor ends just above the trailing wheels and on the pic of the well tank, the leading wheels are quite a way aft of the front of the boiler by the looks of it, so width wise, you might *just* be able to squeeze the boiler around it.

Looking at side views of the well tank, the leading wheels are a lot closer to the driving wheels. So you may need to hack the chassis a bit.

Yes, I was thinking that. In fact those leading wheels are very close.

Luckily it's a Dapol chassis, so it's mostly made of tinfoil and plastic, so should be fairly easy to hack apart :)
The well tank has outside cylinders which you would need to fabricate if hacking a 14xx, worth a try.
Many years, John Greenwood scratchbuilt all three well tank survivors in 2mm finescale

I'm just resurrecting this thread as Shapeways are now offering a Well Tank resin body :

Making up something like this is pretty much way beyond my comfort zone but I'd dearly love a Well Tank and in reality, I wouldn't mind at all if it were to end up a non working model.
So, do I purchase a body and take it from there?
I'd then perhaps consider a 14xx chassis.
Any thoughts?

I'm planning on buying one and seeing what I can come up with but it's sitting in my basket until I have enough there to justify the postage.
Unfortunately a 14xx chassis is a non starter to motorise it as it is too bulky and the wrong way round:

It will be a way off yet but once to hand I'll post up what I came up with but it may well be a scratch built chassis.
