I herd some of them were Friesian cold and had just gathered to keep warm while waiting for the Milk Train to London.

Typical herd mentality - half of them are in front of the yellow line instead of behind it - one does it and others follow :)

One of the stories about the lack of speed on the Manchester and Milford was of a passenger putting his head out of the window to shout a query about why the train had stopped between stations.
"A cow on the line!" came the laconic reply.
After five minutes the train started up, but ground to a halt again ten minutes later.
"Another cow, I suppose?"
"No. It's the same one."
