Having dabbled in 009 in my yoof, I still have a healthy interest in the gauge. So having bought the April Railway Modeller for the article on Terry's Neely layout, I was interested in the review of the new RTR Lynton & Barnstable loco by Heljan.
This is an important development, as it is the first British RTR locomotive in history. The review is glowing (which is understandable seeing Peco had a big say in it's production, making sure that the model would run on Peco 009 track and points), and the model looks fantastic in the photos.
Almost enough to make one think about taking up 009 again! Except, perhaps for the price - 200 quid - although if it performs as well as it looks, I think it would be worth it.
Thumbs up from me, anyhow.
Just had a look on Hattons site for this Bealman and they are doing it for £146 and £182.60 with DCC decoder, why it is .60 i don't really understand, but it looks a really nice loco.
Am i right in saying it runs on N Gauge stock, but with everything else OO size i.e. engine's, coaches etc + building. :confused1:
Yes. 009 represents narrow gauge railways in 4mm scale.
There is no other gauge than N
Sticks fingers in ears - "Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalal" :P
I have in the past considered adding a narrow gauge line on my layout using Z gauge track, Mick :D
However, as I very much doubt I will even complete the layout as it is, it ain't gonna happen.
At least one of our members has done it, though, if I recall.

Well, technically
it is N gauge track; i.e., the rails are 9 mm apart. Just being used for 4 mm scale modelling!
So you can have your cake and eat it here!
Cheers, NeMo
The OO9 L&B has been in development for some time now. I've seen the engineering prototype on display on the PECO stand at a few shows. Must admit I thought it was going to sold as a PECO product rather than Heljan, to go with the PECO coaches and wagons. Very nice, would definitely suit my lad's OO9 layout nicely.
Along with the Peco coaches and wagons (I like the look of the new slate wagons too), it could bring 009 modelling out of the niche position it currently occupies.
And I'm sure established 009 modellers like Ted Polet will appreciate the new developments.
I don't really see a problem with OO9 really, it would i imagine be a lot easier to work on, although i suspect it would take up more room because in affect you are using OO gauge models aren't you. :beers:
Indeed, no problem at all. It's just a totally different genre. There are some brilliant 009 layouts out there. Some fictional, some accurate depictions of real locations such as the spiral on the Festiniog.

Although those little locos will go round as tight a curve as conventional N gauge I suspect. So layout room could be similar but take in less in terms of complexity and scenery.

from a major mass-market manufacturer... There have been previous R-T-R British 009 models from various small-scale / cottage industry builders.
While the L&B loco is a significant development, I suspect that they will be out-sold by a large margin by the forthcoming Baldwin from Bachmann, it being a much more numerous and wide-spread prototype of which a handful survive.
:-[ I must admit to having a fair amount of 009 stock and locos which when possible gets run on Ruleoneshire without the viaduct being in place. It confuses the grandkids at times when a 009 loco follows normal N gauge stock around.
I even have a trackside crew and a wheelchaired old man :-\ around when I am relaying track section. He needs his beard repainting and smartning up a bit before he will be allowed on the board again. :-[

Sorry about that, Jon. I seem to have let myself go a bit :-[
