Title: Euclid-type Dump Truck
Post by: Nick on February 28, 2017, 04:05:21 PM
I want to have a mining/construction type vehicle in my quarry yard. I had in mind the type of dump truck that Euclid used to make. Big yellow things! ;)

Does anyone produce/market them in the UK? I have found a couple of candidates made by a company called Railway Express Miniatures in the States, which appear to be distributed by Walthers, but I can't find anyone handling them over here. (I'm not wedded to these particular models, something else would do.)

The only dump trucks I can find in UK ranges are very old vehicle types, which won't suit - it's a present day layout.

Any ideas?

I worked costing repairs to Terex earthmoving equipment in the 1980's. Big lime green things, with dump trucks, loaders and scrapers of enormous size.  I had larger diecast models of them, long ago sold on, made by NZG/Conrad, and I've been looking for N scale a lot lately, but yet to find any I'm afraid. Similar trucks from Volvo, Komatsu and others are also seemingly impossible to find at N, though hopefully someone here will prove me wrong.

DM-Toys in Germany have the best range of construction equipment at N gauge that I have yet found. Lots of different manufacturers from across the planet, including Langley Models and themselves. Sadly only four dump trucks/tippers, but three are artics and one is included on the back of a low-loader, and not what I think you are looking for. Worth a gander though, and delivery is quick (48-72 hours in my experience) but perhaps €10 p&p for one small item is off-putting.

4 pages of items here:
https://www.en.dm-toys.de/liste/kategorie_en/fahrzeuge_en/tags_en/baufahrzeug_en.html (https://www.en.dm-toys.de/liste/kategorie_en/fahrzeuge_en/tags_en/baufahrzeug_en.html)

PS - Euclid became part of General Motors. GM changed brand name to Terex for complex reasons.

Thanks, Mike. Cool job working with those...

You're right - those aren't really what I'm looking for.

This is the Railway Express range that I found:

https://www.walthers.com/railway-express-miniatures (https://www.walthers.com/railway-express-miniatures)

but again, as with your link, shipping a $20 N scale model over from the States looks rather prohibitive. I'm not that desperate yet!

This is more like the Terex stuff I worked with:

Not a lot of detail on manufacturer and stuff by the seller - not sure about this. :hmmm:

The price of this monster might scare you too, and that is before the shipping cost.

That is indeed the sort of thing I was looking for.

But as you say, what manufacturer is it? It doesn't look big enough compared to the man. I just looked up a Komatsu brochure, and the HD605 is 13 feet high to the cab top.

It's not one of these is it?

No trouble - I'll take three! Not...

Shapeways is a bit like that, isn't it?  :(

Bachmann used to do a rather crude looking Euclid (it was lime green in colour) 6-wheeler dump truck in one of their N scale vehicle accessory packs several years back.
I think I may still have mine somewhere, as it never ended up on any of my layouts. I'll have a look for it tomorrow when I have more time.

EDIT- Found it a lot quicker than I anticipated.  Rather a basic looking bonneted thing - will post a picture of it tomorrow

No, I don't think so. The wheel centres are about equal on the one I linked, and the modelling looks a lot better than the keyring version.

But something's not to scale, whether it's the man or the truck:

Hi Nick

I have looked extensively for construction vehicles and have located the articulated dump truck as seen on the low loader lorry separately. This has been sold individually and I bought three directly from Japan but this was about three years ago. There are a number of model brand names used in Japan and I cannot remember which one this model was sold under. It is a nice model with mirrors and other details to fit.

As for quarry dump trucks there is a crude dicast model sold on eBay regularly but it does look a little over scale.  Also Norscot minis do a dump but again a crude model

Tomix do a range, and I had a dump truck ( alloy) which I cannot remember buying - all due to appear now at the Scottish rail show.

The odd vehicle on the trailer is actually a snow blower.

Some of them came from Plus Daughters.

NOne listed but they always have Tomix vehicles at shows - worth a call?

This is the one that Bachmann used to make.
Figure shows the size of the model.
I've had this example for over 20 years, so I don't know how long they have been out of production. It came in a pack that included a front loading shovel and possibly a couple more vehicles.
It's a bit basic, but it could certainly be used as a basis for making a decent looking model out of it with a bit of work - Said by someone currently converting an N, right-hand drive Tomix motorbus to a left-hand drive trolleybus........!

@ScottishModeller (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2402) may have some info as he was looking for Tomix construction models. ( I sold him mine)

Hi Nick,

I see I get a mention further on in the thread!

Anyway - I'll address your initial query...

Construction gear in the UK are as rare as hens teeth.

Unless you are lucky (As I was) and find someone with what you want that is.

Ranges I know about and have purchased from in the past.

Bachmann USA - That Green dumper you show further down.
Bachmann USA - Bucket Loader - Make not recognisable, but appears to be same scale as the dumper which was 1:160.

Tomix - A range of equipment, dump truck, bucket loader, bulldozer, snow blower, telehandler, low loader, tracked shovel loader.
Unbranded stuff appears randomly from time to time, buy it when you see it!
GHQ Construction - whole range of construction gear - rare to find in the UK. How rare? In 10 years serching I've only found the Komatsu Tracked Excavator.

Places to try...

Osbourns, Sons and Daughters, N-Train.

Also eBay - Japan ( but don't take the photos as accurate). I just bought what I thought was a bundle which included some construction gear, found out on delivery that the construction gear shown in the photo wasn't included! Being able to read Japanese would be handy....but I don't.

Also....

Wath the cheap shops like Poundstretcher for key rings that sometimes have construction gear as part of the fob!

Thanks

ps - there is a JCB 4CX available but whenever I've found it, I only had glimpses before others beat me to the purchase.

Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of information - I didn't realise the issue was going to be so complicated, or that the vehicles would be so difficult to obtain.

Just to add to the store of knowledge, I eventually tracked down the website of Railway Express Miniatures, that I referred to earlier. They trade as JL Innovative Design  (http://www.jlinnovative.com/nvehicles.html)now, and have a small range of vehicles and structures in N (1/160, obviously). I've had a quick look and it seems that they ship to the UK for a flat $10, which is attractive.

They may be of interest to US outline modellers. Or modelers, I suppose that should be...  ;)

Maybe Oxford Diecast will oblige to provide loads for its new low-loader trailer.
