I've just heard of a plan to produce a TV show about railway modelling. The show would cover the building of a line along the length of Scotland's Great Glen, around 75 miles. The model would be in 'O' gauge.
I don't know if I would actually class this as 'modelling' as we know it on the forum here. Interesting though.
For now, that's all I know.....
Just found this: http://www.classicogauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=1656 (http://www.classicogauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=1656)
Could make for Nessie-sary viewing as it will be a monster of a model line. :D
Doesn't matter what thread you look on in this forum lately, it's become pun central! I don't know who has trained you all but there were no sleepers in the class that day. :NGaugersRule:
Puns aside - I'm ignoring the temptation to pick up on your 'sleepers' @Zogbert Splod (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4202) - let's hope the finished program, and the rail line, are more successful than James May's Flying Scotsman model outing, fun that it was.
Doesn't seem to be any time-frame mentioned. :hmmm:
:oopssign:
I thought this was a thread about a certain Mr Campbell but can see I was wrong so I'll leave quietly now.

It'll be a part of the plan to keep us up here quiet and unthinking over the next little while. Just in case we get any ideas above our station... *flag*

No need to rail against it!
:worried:
There's a bit more info on that forum now:-

Many thanks for the update.
It will be an interesting venture.
Living in Culloden I think I'll have to keep an eye out for this one. I'm not sure how they'll manage to do that -I suspect there will be allot of TV smoke and mirrors employed artistic licence used but I was declared a pessimist from birth and prepared to be proven wrong.

I'm with you, I can't see them laying 75 real miles of 'O' gauge track. At the best it'll be lay some, run a bit, lift some from behind, move it ahead, repeat... I'm still gonna watch it to see what they do though.....
LoL
If we assume 40% trade discount off Hattons 12yd pack @ £73 I reckon we'd be talking £400k of track but the logistics would render it N/A anyway (I kniow what all the roads are like -and they're pretty AWFUL). They'd be cheaper renting a sports pitch and setting up the scale run of track at £10k. OR I suspect they'll pick a few scenic points on the way, lay a 100yds, film it, move on. It'll be a bit like great canal journeys do.
.....not like we're talking Eastenders viewer figures so I'd be a little realistic what they're proposing.
Interesting project though!!
Rich
In addition, if they're talking about laying all the track in the two week period, that's five miles of track a day.
:hmmm:
Latest news is that it's some collaboration between C4 and the BBC in Scotland, they are now putting out an appeal for volunteers to help out in the building of it.
Have a look at this little article about it, i think it would be great, especially if they can get others people interested in our hobby.

The collaboration between CH4 and the Beeb are the same, because the Beeb own CH4 don't they? Or they make programs for each other, too much for me :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:
Happy Modelling.
Shades of what's his name from Top Gear but far more ambitious. Great idea though. And to think there was at least one proposal to put a 12 inch to the foot railway through there. The idea appears as the basis for a track plan in one of Iain Futers excellent books.
And all the thieves ad free-loaders will gather!!
Are the proponents of this scheme REALLY serious? Do they actually KNOW what they are proposing? At its most basic, how on earth are they going to provide sufficient security to stop the track from 'walking', and as for the lcomotives and rolling stock! Free to a good home, no questions asked (Fell of a lorry Guv')
Had they been proposing a 71/4" -gauge railway (or even a 5" one) there might have been some merit, but OO?? Really?
And it's not even 1 April....
:laughabovepost: So true.
The more I learn about this, the less interested I become.
"It's modelling Jim, but not as we know it... Not as we know it, Jim..... "
(the more I experience 'predictive texting' the less I like that too...) edit to fix what my tablet did to my post! LOL

And that's
before you scrape off whatever it is on the starboard bow.
The phrase 'media circus' would appear to fit the bill.
Nope, just a bunch of clowns.

Yeah, that's about it...
This MIGHT turn out to be interesting but if you turn it on to watch a show about model railways, well, nah, I don't think so.
I would love to see a program about model railways whatever gauge it is, but preferably :ngauge:
Long time since theres been a decent programme about model railways on terrestial TV. I remember one from Belfast by Ulster TV I think That was presented by Drew donaldson and R.C.(Robbo) Ormiston-Chant. The first time I had ever set eyes on 'Robbo the Yobbo' and I was sore disapointed. I expected a pluffed up buffoon with a handlebar moustache and a voice that could penetrate solid rock. Actually he was a quietly spoken (At least on screen) elderly man of average height and build. Drew Donaldson you may remember was from Belfast and built O scale Irish gauge clockwork. It was an entertaining programme for its time. I seem to remember there was a programme on one of the cable channels during the brief period when we had NTL. It was... a bit amateurish.
Any more neews on this? It's strange living in the area thers's no sniff about it but maybe no surprise. I still think it's a "nice" idea, but I can't see how justifiable costs stack-up for it -accountants should have killed it off ages ago.
Rich
Not heard a whisper at all, but you know what all these producers are like, they will let on what they are doing then keep everything hush hush lol. :laugh3: :laugh3:
Fascinated by the ambition of this project. I will certainly be keeping my eye on Channel 4 in the future. Is there any talk about a Guinness BOR attempt?
Okay, this project has finally surfaced in the real world. I just caught a snippet of a advert, Dick Strawbridge is in the mix, although I missed a lot of the details.
I did see a wooden trestle bridge though!
Keep your eyes open.
Just seen the whole ad. 71 miles of track.
Sunday 8.00pm
Let's see what the world of smoke and mirrors television has to offer.
Episode 1 (there is more?)
It's steam and from the photos O or gauge 1
