Title: Peco Jubilee price new.
Post by: austinbob on October 26, 2016, 05:29:23 PM
Just out of interest, does anyone remember the price of a brand new Peco Jubilee when they were first introduced all those years ago?
:beers:

Hi all,

The PECO Jubilee was released pre decimal currency.

My heart says 1967 but my brain says 1969!

I know I lusted after one - right from my first sight of one at Bradford Model Railway Centre in 1969. I had seen the adverts in Railway Modeller and knew it was coming.

The price - was a bit of a shock to the system - especially to someone not earning anything - other than weekend and holidays wages!

That's where the heart and brain different dates come into play. I know what date I bought my first one - 1977, with my first proper wage.

I remember when I traded all my OO stock in for N Gauge I had a choice of the big price engine and very little stock, or 2 smaller engines and a fair bit of stock and that was 1969.

I have a faint recollection thet the price was £9 17s 6d or something very similar.

Thanks

Thanks ScottishModeller.

You've only posted a few times so welcome to the forum and many thanks for the info. We're supposed to be helping you as a new member but your input is much appreciated.

Assuming that the Jubilee was first on sale for the price you suggested in 1968 then, and I know this is just a silly calculation, taking into account inflation the current price would be approx £156.00.
This is not far off what you'd expect to pay for a new modern loco (especially after the proposed price hikes from Hornby, Dapol and Bachmann cos of Brexit).

Just an observation, but interesting all the same. It's also interesting that you can pick up a very little used Jubilee for less than £70.00

I'm full of useless information - sorry. - but I find this very interesting - how sad is that!!
:beers:

Nope, originally 1969. That was the Mk1, it had gear coupled driving wheels (you can distinguish it from  later models because the front con-rod crankpin locates in an open "fork" rather than a hole).

It was reintroduced in 1977 as the Mk3 (don't know where the Mk2 went!) this time no gear coupling to driving wheels just the rods doing the job.

That's when I bought my first one - £26.80.

Interesting. According to the Bank of England 'inflation calculator' that £26.80 works out at £150.19 in 2015. So about 25% more than the £120 you'd pay for a Farish Jubilee today.

The Peco Jubilee was always the most expensive RTR British loco when I was a lad in the late 70s. Peco missed a trick by never releasing a BR Green version.

The order of price back then was Lima - Farish - Mnitrix - Jubilee!

Hi all,

No need to go overboard with the welcome!

I have some thick skin - gained from years of posting on Yahoo Groups plus other foorum that seem to have sprouted all over the modelling world!

Yes - My N gauge days go right the way back to the late 60's.

If any of you remember at one of the London Exhibitions with a track layout that featured as diamond crossing and a train that went round and round - just missing it's tail on the crossing - That was what convinced me to get rid of all the OO and start again cin N.

I seem to remember that a certain Mr Allison had something to do with that!

Anyway, over that time I've had some involvement with the various makers of RTR N Gauge - Remember the Farrish 'Paint Your Wagon' competition? I had 6 entries in that but obviouisly chose some uncommon liveries as I didn't get anywhere!

In the late 70's I was involved with D&M Kits and produced all the finished models that featured in the adverts at the time.

So - may be new or fairly new - on here - but an old hand really!

Thanks

Hi Roy,

Thanks for the confirmation that my brain is getting things correct!

Your 1977 price is about the same as I would have paid, but I got staff discount off as I was working for the shop at that time!

It cost me exactly £21.00 and I remember going home and getting a right earful from the parents!

They were astounded that I would pay that much for a 'little engine like that' when I could have got a 00 one for less!

Thanks

Also worth a reminder that the 'Peco' Jubilee was built by Rivarossi
