Title: I went back to work on Tuesday.
Post by: mark100 on September 02, 2016, 12:31:55 PM
For those who know me,
I left the family business last year after 30 years to try a new venture in the Logistic industry.

Nice Job title, Shift Team leader, nice salary etc etc

Just before the last bank holiday we were told that there was some restructuring taking place and some shift team leader jobs may go.
Me being the new boy was one of those people who was going to be given a new job.
So on tuesday i went back in and was told that they wanted me to work in warehouse hygiene group. i.e litter picking, sweeping, emptying bins and once done, join the rest of the warehouse team to do picking and placing on a pallet.

I was gobsmacked and told them that i had my own forklift license and asked if i could do loading/unloading to be told that it wouldn't be renewed next year and no! i can't do forklifting.

I told them, that i couldn't do this new job and asked them what the notice period is.
They said i'm contracted to a month's notice, but they could turn a blind eye and accept a week's notice.
I asked them if i could take a week's leave as of Wednesday to decide on whether i wanted to stay or just call it a day and hand my notice in.

So i have been off work since Wednesday.
Every agency luckily wants to know me because i own my own personal forklift license and have my own transport, but i have to be unemployed before they can sign me on.

A friend who once worked in employment law (aka my father in law) has told me to ignore their kind gesture of turning a blind eye to a weeks notice and told me to hand in the contracted months notice and if they want rid of me within the month, they would have to pay the remainder of my notice period.

A.E.M Andy has suggested i could paint more AEM N Gauge loco kits to sell, but that means being stuck indoors at home even longer.

I could return back to the family stone masonry business, but that to me is taking a step backwards

I have 5 days left to ponder on what to do, but to be honest I think life is about gambling and making the right choice and I think the months notice is inevitable and I will go where the agencies send me until some Employer asks can we keep you here.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation before ?

Why would you have to be unemployed before an agency would sign you on
when you can walk away from your existing job ?

ps restructuring , managementspeak for the boot.

Agencies won't sign you on until you are actually available to work for them and it's not really giving you the boot when they offer you another job within the company which is still at the same salary.  it just that i don't want the new job they are offering.
If i was just to walk away and not return, then i would not get the holiday entitlement that i have still got left to use this year as a lump sum payment.
Thankfully my Wife works and so does our eldest daughter who pays board and our house is paid off, so it not as if we are going for broke if i do hand my notice in. it just means my luxuries will have to go hold for a short period of time until i can find something new to do.
