Title: Mass traction tyre failure
Post by: Rabbitaway on August 04, 2016, 10:07:05 PM
Hi All

Interesting mass failure of tender traction tyres on a number of Farish locos as I had to replace tyres on all of these locos together

Black Five
4MT
Royal Scott
A1
J39

Not a big issue but odd they all failed at the same time

I do tend to use my collection of streamers less than my modern stuff so looks like it is just down to a time factor

How long do these tyres last before they either perish or become loose?

Thanks

Do you use any cleaning fluids on your tracks or to clean wheels?

I have seen this before when a whole lot of traction tires rotted together about six months after an american track cleaning fluid was used.

I don't think you can really put a number on tyre life - there are too many variables in usage and environmental that can affect it...

Multiple simultaneous failures is most likely due to some external factor. For example have you recently started using a new track or wheel cleaning fluid?

Hi

No track cleaning fluids

Stored away from sunlight

As I said, little used over the last year

Some locos bought new others second hand

I will put this down to coincidence

Noted that a Jubilee stored the same way is fine as are the traction tyres on loco driven WD and Dapol locos

:hmmm:

Maybe its like bananas, one ripe one causes other fruit stored with it to rot as well!

Farish tyres are softer it seems than those used by Dapol.  Having said that the only tyre failures I have had on UK outline were on a Dapol A4 bought secondhand which had been over-oiled by its first owner, and very recently a Dapol B1 also secondhand and over-oiled.

Other major causes of tyre loss are slipping on starting and skid stopping- the curse of the automatic call-on or having trains run into dead sections.  Likewise pushing the loco when you reach a dead section is not good for the tyres.

Finally my friends who use re-railers also seem to have problems with tyres- pushing the loco tender-first along the track while the wheels of the loco run down the slope.  N-gauge steamers are little terrors to put on the track but it IS possible without a re-railer and without grabbing the loco by the valve gear.

Hope this helps
Les

Another, less likely, possibility is that you have a bit of damaged track with a sharp burr sticking up and damaging the tyres.
