Morning all,
Can one of the moderators please advise how I go about deleting my account?
I PM'd some of you over the weekend but not had any reply as yet.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Scotty
Sorry Scott, I wrote three paragraphs to you and then my laptop started installing Windows 10. >:( Am now on 14%.
Please wait and I'll message you as soon as I can. Thanks!
I'm sad to read this, Scotty :(
Message sent.
:sorrysign: to hear that you want to leave , have read many of your posts and its allways sad to loose a friend even an Internet one.
Please reconsider.
Bob
Sorry to see you leave.
Think carefully before you press the delete key.
Scotty,
Please leave it a few days before finally deleting your account.
I once was bad mouthed on this website and nearly left the site. But I did eventually calm down and realized this really is one of the best forums I have ever been on and so just blocked any posts from the member that upset me and thankfully remained. Never had a problem since.
Steve
This is oft used in response to these sorts of threads on another forum I frequent. Take it in the humour it's intended...

We usually ignore such requests for 24/48 hours to give members chance to reconsider, you'd be a sad loss Scotty. :(
Hi please rethink before you delete over the past 6 weeks I have never seen so many kind ,caring and helpful guys and gals who have given strength and support and comfort in my late wife passing away not have had this from my friends in my everyday life as it was freely given to me and my son on here SO please don't let one person spoil such a wondrous time you have on here with so many caring and thoughtful people mike
Yeah, keyboard warriors are just a bunch of ninnies
they don't bother me so hopefully that's not the reason
you're leaving.
:sorrysign: as a fellow modeller from Aberdeenshire sorry to see you leave.
J
A sad loss if you go. Please reconsider.
:'(
you'll be missing the never ending chris in Prague storyline.... better than the archers at present!
I will also be sorry to see you go, please reconsider. :goodbye:
Your posts were always intelligent and well considered. Who else will I be able to quote in my signature?
Scottystitch, you are a valued member here. Your posts are always cool.
The forum is undergoing some tech difficulties at the moment which are being worked on by Only Me, one of our computer savvy members! Such is the comeraderie of the forum.
You simply have to look at this thread to see your input is appreciated. :beers:
George
Try number three
Please don't go Scotty, you're a valuable addition to this forum and I'd rather see you here than not. The Internet has a way of exaggerating things which in real life we'd shrug off in a heartbeat. Nil illegitimi carborundum!
I have to agree what has been said by other members, please do not leave your input is valuable so please stay with us Scotty.
I am on Holiday but think have seen the post that has caused this.
I am voting STAY Scotty!!!
Please....
Unsubscribing. Seems to be a common problem with web sites. Most require some form of registration to access info or post but getting out is next to impossible.
I had seen some suggestions that this is to keep the number of registered users as high as possible when site owners sell advertising space or sell the site.
Just wish it was a simple button to unsubscribe when you are no longer interested in a site as it is for many e-mail subscriptions.

For me I am saddened to see each member go, and hope to resolve it before they go. It's too easy to delete an account and then regret it the next morning. I have only been asked to delete 8 members in the five years of the forum, and half of those are from family members saying that that member had passed away.
If anyone wishes to leave then they can just send me a PM, and I'll delete them.
I agree with the others why not stay, I joined this forum just after it started but over the past two years I have been building layouts in other scales, I did not delete myself from the forum because I change my mind about what scale my next layout will be like I change my socks, sure enough I decided to return to N gauge and i am happy that I didn't delete my forum account.

"Unsubscribing" is easy, just turn off all e-mail notifications in your own Profile and log out. No need for account deletion then, no-one is forced to come here and log in, it's your choice if you visit the site again ;)

Sort of, but usually when people decide to unsubscribe they'd like to delete all their contributions to the forum as well. As in, leaving no trace of their existence at all. Very few, if any, forums allow people to do this.

DELETE! DELETE!

I hope a policy is decided upon before Tank just deletes me and all my ramblings will be lost forever :worried:
There would be an absolute ban on you trying to delete your account Mick , your part of the package that is THE Forum , we couldn't survive without your witty posts.
Regards
Bob

Doing that though Nemo could potentially make 10's threads that the user participated in unfollowable (is that even a word!??)...
If a user really wants to leave I guess they could be deleted but the posts kept with a generic "ex-forum-member" username to provide thread consistency.
I have seen these unintelligible threads on some other groups, especially in France where there is a legal right to have all you posts deleted if you request it when you leave. It is a sort of reverse "Big Brother" effect (the Gearge Orwell one) where you rewrite history instead of the Regime doing it and "erasing" you.

If you think about it, there are several reasons a person might want to leave a forum, some professional, some personal.
A professional reason might be the nature of their work. Their job might mean that their previous history of posting information and opinions is no longer tenable. Such information might undermine them, or betray prejudices, or reveal aspects of the work they do, or make them easily identifiable, etc. Some employers insist on their staff being more or less invisible online.
A personal reason might be anger at someone on the forum or the entire forum itself. They might want to remove all their contributions as a way of hurting or at least annoying the forum community, demonstrating their anger. Or else they might not want the forum to benefit from the work they put into it, especially if your contributions were particularly important and helpful. So by taking "your toys" home with you, you're expressing your disillusionment in a very obvious ways.
I have no idea what ScottyStitch means by "deleting his account" and like others here I'd be sorry to see him go. Indeed, I'm sorry to see anyone leave this forum and disappointed when people feel offended or threatened by other members of the forum. But at the same time I do understand that the usual forum approach of "just don't reply to emails from the forum" isn't fair because it means the forum owners retain full control over the member's contributions.
Cheers, NeMo

On RCGroups I have seen instances where a disgruntled user has deleted the content of every one of their posts.
Requires some dedication though if one is a prolific poster. Funny in that many of the deleted post content remain as quotes in other's posts.
I agree with Sprintex in that delete notifications and never revisit is quite effective (have several sites in whose subject I have lost interest) but it doesn't have the drama for some that a public dummy-spit has.
