Hey all,
I recently bodged up the paintwork on my Farish class 91 (let's just say that plastic weld that dries white + GNER blue doesn't go well together!) and I'm thinking of buying one of Electra's class 91 East Coast overlays to hide this (because I would like to modernise it to fit in with the layout anyway). Only thing is, I'm clumsy as anything and I daren't apply these overlays myself, because knowing me, I'm sure to muck it up in some way! So, is there anybody willing to/that knows somebody who I can send my farish 91 and overlays to, and they'll apply them for me for a small sum of cash? :thankyousign:
Also, I know that some vinyls require paint work to the model for it to be complete, but is the farish 91 one of the models that requires paintwork to be complete?

It depends how brutal you want to be with your donor 91 - for the best results, strip down the bodyshell, smooth off the raised side vents, mask off the yellow end panels and spray the whole thing with white primer. That will give the vinyls a good backing, so the colour shows through.
I can do the 91 in East Coast Grey, ex-GNER Blue with EC Branding, 91101 "Flying Scotsman" in Maroon, 91110 "Battle of Britain Memorial Flight" and VTEC Red/White, though the latter is not official yet.
I'm sure there are forum members who are able to do the conversion to a higher standard than I could manage, though let me know if you get stuck!

Thanks very much for the advice. Actually, if you were to release a vinyl VTEC Red/White for the 91, I would probably wait a while and go with that. I did enquire somebody about a respray to VTEC livery, but for all the coaches and the 91 & 82, they were talking excess of £700!

My personal opinion
Electra Vinyls are fine for coaches / multiple units and not readily available items
For locomotives I would only consider a repaint
I would suggest you post photos of the damage
We can then determine the best course of action
A good repainter will strip and remove any previous paint (such as Millfield Models)
If you want fine detail then consider Mercig Studios
I have been using Electra Vinyls for rare coaches (RLB, RFO, BFO, DBSO, Class 156 SPTE, and so on)
However, the finish can easily seen when compared to other coaches in a large rake

The damage is not too bad in reality, and if I could find the spot on accurate shade of blue and red, it might be okay. Only thing is, what shade of blue??

Try rubbing one of the affected areas down with "T-Cut" and see if the plastic underneath is affected ?
If it's smooth then Precision Paints do a GNER Blue (or used to anyway !) and you may be able to touch it up.
