Feel free to run me out of town with pitch forks, but, has anyone else seen the really lovely O Gauge Class 08 from Dapol? I love the class and, whilst I've never had anything to do with O gauge, will be extremely tempted to get one, even if I had it to just to sit and look at. I'm sure a small shunting layout would be cheap and easy to build. Best of all, they're so cheap! £169 for all that loco!! I really want one. A couple of nice pics here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/102801-dapol-08/page-5 (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/102801-dapol-08/page-5)
I agree.
I was going to build a little 00 shunting layout with an 08 and a 24: I may have to sell the 00 (again) and get one of these.
Just don't use it to test your N gauge layout platform clearances... Looks like you could put the Farish version inside the cab for safe keeping... Looks very nice though.
I want one, I want one, I WANT ONE :D :D :D :D :D
I see no problem at all with modelling O and N gauges. They complement each other perfectly. One is all about the details on a single wagon or loco, while the other is about having the space to model a realistic length train running through suitably spacious surroundings.
If anything, HO/00 is a compromise between the two, and while clearly acceptable to the majority of modellers, it's a "jack of all trades, master of none" scale in my opinion. Can't get the same level of detail as easily as with O, while consuming too much space to create realistic trains and scenery when compared with N.
I've been building the odd Parkside Dundas kit* over the last couple pf years, and just like you, will be getting either a 'Terrier' or 08 in the near future.
Cheers, NeMo
(*Kit building in O is an absolute treat compared with N, and I'd recommend the Parkside Dundas kits in particular as being excellent value -- £30-40 each -- and easy to do. Everything's in the box, right down to the transfers, wheels and couplings. Once built, they're whopping great things with lots of working features like spring-loaded buffers, and even better, they still fit in the boxes they came in, so storing them is easy.)
Don't worry I have three N gauge 08s and they are one of my favourite engines I would like an O gauge as you say for display I think even a small shunting layout could be quite expensive
I couldn't resist their O gauge Terrier. I model in three different scales but N is by far my favourite.

The "Dark side" beckons. I have had an interest in one lodged with Hattons for the last year or so. When it does become available I will book myself into the local A&E for when Mrs "H" discovers my crime...
I like the idea of the sound based version hauling conflats loaded with beers vemerging out into the garden on a hot summers day.... However the price of DCC equipment may result in a silent version.
I have been sorely tempted by one. We are planning a 'small' 0 gauge layout at our club - a far more manageable replacement for the 40' monster we cannot accommodate! A nice green 08 may well fit the bill.

Totally agree. My big layout in N with trains running through the scenery is my first love. My new mistress is my O gauge Western and MkIs, and I can't wait for the Blue 08 I pre-ordered over a year ago.
I have a shelf above my layout and am tempted to place something there as a static display - an O gauge 08 is tempting... Need to see it in the flesh though before committing.
Have to say this may be a start to an O gauge thing for me, they look cracking!
 Shame they still have the wrong number of rivets and bolts moulded on it
I still want one
At the York show there was an 08 in either G or 1 scale on display (not an expert on big stuff I'm afraid) and it was even more tempting than the Dapol O gauge one we all now want. An outstanding model with incredible detail and characterful weathering (no I don't have any photos of it). Got me wondering if I could have a garden layout. I probably could.
If anyone is interested they also make a 60 and MGR Hoppers
Regards
Phil

I saw that too and directed my wife to admire it! Also saw an 'O' 4F with sound that was rather good.
Like the sounds of MGRs, GNER.
I ordered one of these earlier today.....I wonder where this will lead? :D
Last time I had a thing for 7mm wagon kits, I was quite poor....Im not so skint now :worried:
On the Tower Models website, they are asking for folks who pre-ordered a blue 08 with them to specify whether they want pre-tops or post-tops. If you pre-ordered a blue one, I suggest going to the website http://www.tower-models.com (http://www.tower-models.com) and clicking "Contact Us".
On their Dapol 08 page there is a neat table that shows the differences between the various versions that are being produced.
I pre-ordered with Tower when it was first announced as BR Blue with Wasp Stripes. I have now specified 08 202 post-tops version and I can't wait... It looks fantastic (speedo cable excepted, not that I'd have known :-[ ).
Hi,
Having handled prototype model it is very good -yes it has a mix of doors and hinge straps but so did the real ones in later life! It is very heavy compared to the N gauge one but I guess £ for pound it is very good value and certainly a lovely shelf queen but is prompting pre-sales.
The Terrier has been the best seller for Dapol and 08 is going the same way.
This is the joy of the hobby - ability to dabble where the fancy takes you.
I am waiting for arrival today of a Gauge one Brighton belle! - a really big shelf queen !

I'll say! The N-gauge version is about 75 cm long and mine takes up so much room I usually just run it as a 2-car formation. How big is the gauge-1 version? Where are you going to run it?

SO far, this has lead to two of the fab Lionheart 16 ton minerals appearing at the front door... http://www.lionhearttrains.com/availablemodels.php?id=2 (http://www.lionhearttrains.com/availablemodels.php?id=2)
It has been mentioned that O and N are kind of bedfellows it that the really do offer the little and large scenario.....pity for me my main interest is supposed to be 4mm stuff :worried:
