Title: slow farish Deltic
Post by: MrDavidCallan on February 09, 2016, 06:07:57 PM
Hi all.
Something that has me scratching my head.Got a secondhand Deltic that ran fine for ten minutes then started to squeal and slow down drastically in both directions.Stripped it down cleaned everything and replaced brush springs, pickups and cleaned wheels and pickups and cleaned armature.
Used lighter fluid for cleaning and ran lovely.following day back to running slow. Here's the thing, turned it over squirted a small amount of lighter fluid into armature/brushes took off like a rocket.... :confused1:Is there an explanation and(fingers crossed a permanent solution to this?)
Many thanks Aron

Yes - the squeal is added friction from a bearing that's lacking lubricant. The little white bearings in the chassis can need lubricated (and if at all stiff, replaced).

Spraying with lighter fluid probably temporarily lubricated the offending bearings, but presumably dried out before the next use.

Lubricating these (sparingly - don't get it on the commutator or brushes) should cure the problem.

Alan

Thanks Al. Have oiled bearings but I think something in there is binding. So if it plays up again tomorrow maybe a whole new set of bearings needed.

Go through them in turn - often most are fine. Sometimes if it's got very hot at some point one can be slightly melted (armature ones) and this can allow the armature to stray from its position. Check the stiffness of each by turning the respective shafts and discard and replace only those that are stiff in any way.

If it's playing up tonight then it does need attention, even if it appears to work tomorrow - it will recur!

Alan

Replaced the offending bearing. As you said heat got to it.Not noticable unless removed as the hole had just enlarged slightly. An evening of trouble free running.
Thanks a bunch :claphappy:

Well done.

Keep an eye on it - this doesn't spontaneously happen - it's usually a result of split gears or lack of lubrication in the past.

Cheers,
Alan
