Title: Throw-away N gauge?
Post by: railsquid on February 08, 2016, 10:41:52 AM
Leading on from this topic (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=31755.0), has anyone ever actually thrown away or otherwise destroyed N gauge rolling stock etc. for any reason?

So far the closest I've come is binning the body of an ancient Arnold "American style" coach which was part of a job lot; it was warped beyond repair and beyond any conceivable use. I kept the bogies and the weight though. Can't remember what I did with the all-plastic wheels though.

I have never binned any stock but I have given parts away free of charge. I feel if you have damaged or unwanted stock you can always turn it into abandoned stock and placed on a layout or diorama.

Cheers John.

Tend to bin damaged or worn components - e.g. wheelsets with chips on flanges or that have the silver plating gone that horrible yellow colour. Often these could be reused, but there seems little point given there are plenty of better spares about. Broken bodyshells that seem beyond repair too tend to get binned, as do plastic motor components that have been overheated and melted.

Split gears too, to get the little critters out of circulation!!!

I suspect this is the case with most of us - few will bin a complete model (unless really really frustrated with it!) as most recognise that in this hobby components stripped from failed/life expired/damaged units can still have a lot of use.

Cheers,
Alan

Mrs Bealman threw one at me once.... when it bounced of me head I don't recall where it ended up  ;)

Binned a Lima Deltic, it was so out of scale.

Oh, I forgot about that one! Yeah, I did too.... for exactly same reason.

I have a big box of Rapido couplings, and a bigger one of pizza cutter wheels.  What on earth can I do with them?  ???

Cheers  Jon  :)

Sell them, or give them to someone who wants them (oddly I gave a lot of pizza cutters to someone who really wanted metal wheeled stock rather than plastic despite them looking poorer IMHO - each to their own!).
Cheers,
Alan

Re:'...Has anyone ever actually thrown away or otherwise destroyed N gauge rolling stock etc. for any reason?'

Regrettably yes, guilty m' Lud.  My first excursions into 'model trains' involved two Peco Varikit locos running on Arnold chassis, which I was assured were 'N' scale. What I and the seller (acting on behalf of a third party) didn't know was that the locos were .009, not 'N'!!

It took quite a while, the expenditure of a reasonably-large amount of hobby cash (since N was very expensive locally) and the destruction and deliberate dumping of several innocent N-scale wagons (sans wheels and couplers; the 'useful' bits) before the penny finally dropped and I realised that the scales were incompatible.

So yes it does happen; ignorance may be bliss, but it can also be darned expensive....

Thanks for asking.

Hi ,
Yep! Lima deltic , class 17 not-look alike and several lifelike Gp40 in the early attempts to power farish suburban stock as dmus and emus.

Horified my mum by buying a Minitrix warship and cutting chassis in two to provide power for an mtk dmu and another suburban based emu, at the age of 15. that was 38 years ago and still happy to swap bits about.

I too hand on wheels and bits and pieces if it helps another. Also given bits as well!

I had two Lima Deltics, nearly binned them but thought I'd put them on ebay at a "giveaway" price and ended up with nearly £20 in my pocket. Also had several bits of locos and and coaches, which I also planned to bin, but put them on ebay too, and sold the lot!

Never bin anything now!

You could always get an old piece of peco track glue a row of the wheels to it and paint them with rust colours and say they are from the local Heritage Railway

It can be surprising what crap people will buy on ebay! Given that it's free to list, probably worth giving it a go with the starting price as the minimum which makes it worth your while. If you can't be bothered to list a load of low-value items individually, stick them on as a job lot.

If it doesn't sell after a couple of attempts, well, so be it!
