Title: Can dreams really come true?
Post by: Tdm on January 26, 2016, 01:41:36 PM
Some on here will be well aware that I only have a small layout due to space restrictions in the storeroom I currently rent to house my model railway.

Well today I was informed that another storeroom in our complex previously in use had suddenly been emptied and may be available if I was interested.

This morning I had a look at it, and it is much bigger than the one I currently rent (see drawing below), so enquiries are now being made as to if it really is free, and if it is I will put my name down to rent it, providing nobody else has claimed it.

It may take some time to find out if the previous user (and who it is?) has no longer any need of it, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it could possibly me mine to rent.

It is on the 3rd floor as apposed to the 7th floor where my present trastero is, and much nearer to where I live, and it's size would mean I could build a much larger layout than the one I presently have in there, as well as it housing my Classic Car parts including my hardtop which would enable me to enjoy open top motoring once again.

The difference in size compared to my present storeroom is evident from the drawing below - the "red" outline being the boudaries of the new storeroom, the "blue" outline the boundaries of my present lock-up with the shaded area representing my existing layout.

Here's hoping!  :heart2:

My wife (who is President of our complex) is going to have the lock changed on the entrance door, and then see what happens in the next couple of months (ie. if anyone claims it to be theirs).

If not we can then assume the previous User has gone/moved and the storeroom is available once again.

Only problem is the misses says if I do get it, I am not to build a model railway in there bigger than the one I already have - I feel some sleight of hand/illusion coming on if I do get it.

Mystic Squid sees some imperial/metric conversion errors in your future.

Build a new one the same size as your old, then connect your old one to it. May have to do a bit of redesigning.

As the conversion rate from £sterling to Euros changes on a daily basis, I see no reason why the conversion from Feet & inches to Centimeters shouldn't also fluctuate.

After all a "larger" layout in a much larger room would not look any different to a small layout that takes up most of a small room.

Time I think to think positively and start designing a layout that would fit nicely in the room shown whilst still leaving plenty of space for other things, plus space for the misses to store some items of her own to keep her happy.

Time to start playing about with "Scarm" again.

Some months ago I did slightly enlarge my existing layout drawing assuming I only had a few more inches of width to play with, and which would allow 2 double loops of both the inside and ouside tracks for train longer runs.

I will now use this design as a starting point for a much longer/wider layout that fits the far wall of the new storeroom if I do get it.

I do enjoy designing layouts using Scarm software, and will employ Peco streamline points in the future which I have found to be much less troublesome than Setrack ones.

The shape of the layout below will obviously change to suit the design of a much extended space, and could look completely different once I have finished with it. Will post some pictures of any new layout I design in the near future and ask your opinons of it

Hope you manage to get the other store room Terry.
It's definitely a bit on the tight side in the existing one !
I'm sure a nice new pair of shoes for Mrs TDM from the shoe shop under the apartments down on the front there would go a long way towards getting the green light for a larger layout.
Fingers crossed for you.

Regarding the comments about the colours red and blue - I did use red and blue highlighter pens on my drawing, but it seems the scan didn't pick the colours up very well.

I can still make the colours out though - perhaps living in a place where the Sun shines all the time (well almost all the time) helps my eyesight, whereas those of you who have to put up with grey skies most of the time maybe have had your eyes "dimmed" somewhat, or is that  meant to be the other way round?.  :D

Next time I will use crayons instead of highlighters, or maybe my HP Printer/Scanner needs a good clean.

Same colour issue here in Tokyo, where winters are generally sunny, if a little on the chilly side. Still, as long as the trains aren't affected...
