I hope this is the right place! I was just wondering if anyone else on the forum played any instruments? I play the violin and I hope you do too :D
Regards
Phil
Not so sure playing is the correct term but for my 60th birthday I received a guitar.
I'd always wanted to play an instrument and I'm not sure why I didn't learn years ago when many of my friends learned the guitar.
I'm now having weekly lessons and enjoying it but not sure that I could say that I play it yet though although my guitar teacher says I'm doing fine. It is harder than I thought it would be !
Better late than never.
Bass player here - Blues,Rock,Reggae :headbang:
I play guitar, drums, bass and keyboard... in that order of ability... And by play guitar it seems to be more collect guitars...
Sounds like an NGF Band to me :NGaugersRule: And if you can blow a note or strum a string it counts as playing! ;D
I have a slightly different approach, I have a Virtual Pipe Organ on my PC (a freebie - Grande Orgue) to "play" it I import a score to some Notation software, which among other things can generate a MIDI file which I can edit to set stops which will each select a rank of pipes to be used.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ourorgan/files/Testing/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ourorgan/files/Testing/)
Those who can play a keyboard just need a MIDI output to the Software, not having played a piano since I was a kid this is as close as I can get. The G.O. software can cope with any sampled instrument not just organs, I can load it with samples of say flute and harpsichord, or brass or string instruments. Conversely I can load scores for other instruments and "play" them on the virtual organ.
I have a Fender Squire Strat I bought many years ago and the wife said you can cut that racket out so it's still in its case along with a Marshal amp some women just do not get it lol.

Similar to you Geoff. I have a Gibson clone - very nice too and quite expensive - and a Marshall amp.
Have been known to
play make a noise with this on occasions. My fingers are not so nimble now so the guitar stays in its case.
:beers:
I was brought up in brass bands so I used to play the cornet, E-flat (tenor) horn, valve trombone and E-flat bass. I would love to play the slide trombone but can't find a decent one at auction at the moment. These days I only really play the harmonica and whistles - penny and low.
Jazz guitar, and baroque flute.
I've had a couple of Strats and a Telecaster. I then switched to bass and had a Hofner Longscale Verithin. I gave up playing after an accident with a lawn mower coming into very close proximity with my finger ends. Tony Iommi I aren't.
I have a brand new American Strat which I too, spend more time looking at rather than playing because SWMBO doesn't let me. However, Mrs Bealman is a piano teacher and an excellent piano player, as are all the Miss Bealmen. :beers:
Hello - I used to play Alto Saxophone in a military band and dance band but I don't play that now but I still play a church organ and electric organ
Clive H
I used to play the violin. The school orchestra I was in, used to enter area competitions, and we always did very well.
I managed to keep the violin for a long time, until my brother in law managed to misplace it during a house move,
I more recently bought an electric violin, only to discover that my joints are no longer able to hold the violin and bow for very long, before extreme pain sets in. I know I should sell it, but I can be very stubborn.
Maybe, I should get a guitar instead, I have been known to pick out a recognisable tune, but no fancy playing, no chords...................
But then, I still think I will have similar problems as the violin, when I try to put it under my chin, to play.................

I had an American Strat in the 1990s but could never get on with the very sensitive tremelo bridge unit,i sold it & a few years later, i bought a Mexican 1950`s reissue sunbust body & maple neck.Much better instrument!!.
Ray.
FWIW: If my family (all musicians BTW) are to be believed, I play the Fool (that most unusual, rare and difficult instrument) quite well (although, in the interests of familial harmony, not very often). I have also been known to sing, but again, not often, largely because, in a family of musicians the feedback resulting from such an exercise can best be described as being 'interesting...'
Thank you, though, for asking.
I missed this thread. Back in the dim and distant, I used to play a few different instruments. Made a good living out of it for a few years too. It was a good time in my life. When I first got married I was working as a session player but my wife had a problem with the irregular income so I gave it up and went to college for a while then to a 'real' job. I had been making a good income but there wasn't a regular income and she was a bit scared of the situation.
Oh, wait, the thread is about what instruments... OK, double bass, bass guitar, guitar, dobro, 5 string banjo, country style fiddle, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica and tin whistle.
I have played mostly country music and was fortunate enough to do a tour in Hank Locklin's band. I also played with Johnny Cash's step daughter in the studio.
It was all good but I hardly ever pick up an instrument these days though I still have a couple of guitars and a banjo leaning up against the wall. On one level I miss it but on another, I know I don't have the stamina for it any more. Great memories and I don't regret a moment of it.....
I learnt the flute in school, but now, fifty years later, I've lost my embouchure, and I'm too lazy to try to get it back again.
My other passion is playing the church organ which, for the last 14 years has been a Makin 3-manual digital organ wiith 39 ranks (of pipes.) Before that we had a three manual 19 rank organ originally built in the mid 19th century and rebuilt and enlarged in 1921 when people cared about such things. Sadly it fell into disrepair due to lack of funds to maintain it properly and digital was a much cheaper alternative. Much of the time I have to act in a supporting role for a worship group but have to be ready to take over when they can't be bothered to turn up. Needs up to 10 hours of rehearsal time each week just to maintain an acceptable standard so that impinges on model railway time.

I play guitar - rock, blues, a little classical. I have a small collection of 11..
When I'm not restoring locos I sometimes make guitars - these are my home-made babies:

Ysadoor I (made from an old pine door):

Ysadoor II (made from the leftovers of the same door - great for Jim Morrison covers):

A little trap door lets you access the high frets...

Thanks gents! :) *blushes* ;)
Ideas for other shapes/themes for guitar bodies always welcome - commissions considered, too! :)
A few kitchen utensils maybe?

Railway, distant or home signal arm, point lever - forget the mounting, just the lever.

Wow ! someone has hidden talents. I love Victoria - does she also chime and include a metronome ?
Now an HST guitar body in the style of the old HST 125 badge
http://www.badgecollectorscircle.co.uk/badges/view/2463 (http://www.badgecollectorscircle.co.uk/badges/view/2463)
(but mirrored for right handers)
and with blue/white striped neck and a matching banana end would be very cool (working headlights a must!)
I don't think my playing ability quite justifies the price I imagine for custom guitar bodies (or indeed justify anything but earplugs) at this point tempting as it is !
I do play tin whistle (including low G and low D - I'm after a custom low B flat whistle at some point!), and I'm starting to learn folk flute (same fingering but rather different and harder techniques the other end), a little bit of folk harp, a bit of guitar, and owing to finding my tax bill for the year was lower than expected, and a sale in the music shop and a bit of haggling a cheap bass guitar for learning. I suspect next door are now sick of Lucretia My Reflection >:D . There is a plan honestly - my timing with guitar is not good so bass is clearly the way to work on that from scratch ;)
The only one I can claim any degree of competence in is the whistles however !
Any other whistle players ?
Alan

Thanks, Alan! :) Victoria is my personal favourite - unique, and she plays like a dream. She's meant to be a station clock, hence Victoria... Sadly the clock doesn't work - it's mostly solid mahogany under that dial - but she does chime if you pluck a string... ;)
HST Badge, eh...? Hmmm....
Been a Guitar player for more than a few years ! Couple of accoustics, one bass and a few electrics.
More of a 'noodler' over backing tracks etc than a pro player. But I have fun...
I used to play the Trombone at school, I got quite good at it, well according to our old neighbour who had his own band anyway.
I packed it in though, when the school insisted that I had to take O Level (showing my age a bit there) Music, which I wasn't interested in, but they insisted as the instrument was a School one (My parents couldn't afford to buy me one), so I told the school to stick it, I just enjoyed playing the instrument, I wasn't interested in taking any exams or anything like that.
Really regret it now, 35 years later
Cheers
Neal.
Having been nagged by my mother I started to learn the violin at school took them 3 1/2 months to find out that I am totally tone deaf although my hearing is good.
:-[
Having been forced to learn the descant recorder in my yoof, with minimal success it has to be said. I bought a Bass recorder when I took early retirement 9 1/2 years ago and taught myself to play it using music for the Alto recorder. After a year of practice I could play several tunes to my own and my wife's satisfaction. While I don't play often I really enjoy the odd times I pick it up.

Like you, I have built a few guitars in my time. Not as adventurous as yours however. With one exception mine were all in a quest for the ultimate Telecaster. I started on a total of seven of which five were completed. The best one was a major departure from Leo's ideal as it had a pair of pickups and the wiring loom/switches from a Gretsch White Falcon.
Anyhow, while my Tele's were made from a set of plans that I got from Jason Lollor, the craziest one, the exception referred to above was more original. I don't have the working drawings available now but I found the attached pic on an old lap top that I was cleaning up before giving to a friend. It's rough, just a 'sketch' done in a graphics prog. I did start to make it but didn't have time to finish it before I packed up and returned from living in the US...

Wondered if you might find it interesting.....
I have recently taken up the guitar again, I never really learned anything last time and I sold a Epiphone Les Paul standard I had, I wish I hadn't. My son is very good player, he has a few guitars, a few years ago I bought him a new Strat so now he has lent me his old Squire Strat fitted with new strings and also a Fender electro acoustic guitar.
I also play keyboards I have a Yamaha Motif Synth, I have had keyboards and I had a double manual organ a few years ago. I love Music listening too and playing and I am fortunate in having the loft with a computer keyboards and my model railway, my den.

I am a bit chuffed today I nearly managed to play a tune on the guitar, I need to work on the strumming.

I reckon you'd have to be a multi-limbed sea creature to play that.
What do think Railsquid ?
Best regards,
Joe
You think that guitar would be bad to play try this one........https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=pat+metheny+pikasso+guitar&biw=1321&bih=826&tbm=isch&imgil=x6ThpOUP4RYjGM%253A%253Bk-cb1Osze2wZbM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.youtube.com%25252Fwatch%25253Fv%2525253DaNkTMyuP2zM&source=iu&pf=m&fir=x6ThpOUP4RYjGM%253A%252Ck-cb1Osze2wZbM%252C_&dpr=1&usg=__LvZgL__sKtDkEVESlAqOxmp2-4w%3D (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=pat+metheny+pikasso+guitar&biw=1321&bih=826&tbm=isch&imgil=x6ThpOUP4RYjGM%253A%253Bk-cb1Osze2wZbM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.youtube.com%25252Fwatch%25253Fv%2525253DaNkTMyuP2zM&source=iu&pf=m&fir=x6ThpOUP4RYjGM%253A%252Ck-cb1Osze2wZbM%252C_&dpr=1&usg=__LvZgL__sKtDkEVESlAqOxmp2-4w%3D)
I have bought myself a small guitar, the size suits me more than the Fender and besides the Fender was borrowed from my son. It is a Ibenez Talman, which has a small body and slim neck design. I bought it at a good price from GAK online, excellent next day delivery too.(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/8/thumb_35380.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=35380)
Some will say you could have bought another loco for that and some would say (swmbo) you have enough loco's....he...he
Looks very nice Chris.
Hopefully you will find it comfortable to play.
I try to do about 30 mins practise each day (not sure you'd know it though) and have just finished a session.
Enjoying it immensely.
Thanks Port Perran, It is probably not has good has the Fender and being a small body not has loud. But is a electro acoustic, and I love the small body. My eldist son has one so I saw it when I went to visit on Wednesday, I only paid £136 for it and with a free Korg Metronome thrown in as well. I have given his back now so he can't say I have nicked it. I can more or less play two songs now just need some work on my strumming, Like you I just love it.
