Title: Time to put the Trains Away.
Post by: longbridge on December 18, 2011, 09:44:17 AM
Hate to say this but I am getting bored with our wonderful hobby, not bored with trains though with intentions of videoing steam and diesel trains next year.

It has been something that has been creeping up on me for quite some time, I have no doubt that if all is well in the health department I will most likely return to the hobby one day.

I am taking up a hobby that I have been on and off involved in since the mid 1960s and that is Shortwave Radio DXing which involves listening for weak international radio stations in places like Brazil and many other South American and African countries, I love turning a radio on and listening to exotic places around the world, come to think of it I don't need to turn a radio on to do that I just need to take a train into our city of Brisbane.

Not leaving the forum though as I enjoy reading the banter on many sections and hope to continue contributing wherever I can,

Hi ORB - sad news about the modelling side of railways but I'm pleased you'll still drop by and pass on your experience/humour and great musical taste to us all. Maybe you'll be able to pick up Chorley radio (coming in your ears, as the advert says) :smiley-laughing:

Good luck 73's and happy DXing, occasionally I fire up the FT817 and listen to the HF bands when I'm having a quiet time away from  trains and cars.

Oddly enough I went the other way - from amateur radio back to model making.

Well that was a total waste of time, I spent the day checking world radio stations and frequency/time allocations only to find that due to the world financial downturn many world radio stations have closed down or running a skeleton service, there has also been an increase in Religious stations which I have no interest in at all, things are never the same when you go back to them.

So its back to N Scale model trains, wont bother doing much to the layout until late Feb by then I amy be rearing to go again

Sorry ORB, but once you're gone you're gone.
Subject to the mods' careful consideration, you may be allowed to reapply, then you'll have to re-introduce yourself, just like any other newbie, and be subject to the usual riducule by the membership.

You can do as you please Mike, I asked for it but I have to tell you one thing 4x2 and myself are pretty thick skinned old buggers so it water off a ducks back.

Peed off about the situation with world band radio though.

Hi ORB, Nice to see you back (brief though it was !). Are you starting with a 'clean slate' or are you going to pick up where you left off ? Just curious, as you had some good plans.

I watched an American DVD where the layout just 18 inches wide ran around the walls of the room, I liked the idea as to how easy it was to reach everything, because my layout was still in the early stage of construction I decided to fire up the jigsaw and make a few alterations, it is now 15 inches wide triple circuit bi level and runs around the walls of my 10ft x 5 ft shed, I like the idea of trains passing through mountain scenery with small villages and industries in between.

My layout is 50cm wide and 80 in some areas with most of it in shelving (there is stuff above and cupboards etc below).  50cm seems to be 19.5 inches in oldie speak and I find it a good width. The 80 is a bit more of a reach but the sections that use it have a front scenic section with a raised fiddle or feeder track behind, so its acceptable. 50 is a spot narrow for a grand station entrance or a big yard but for everything else seems to work nicely.

ORB - I don't think many would have missed you...

Hang on... That didn't come out right!

I don't think any one would have noticed you were gone...

Nope... Still not right!

Can any one help me out here?! I think I'm just digging myself deeper!

:smiley-laughing:

Welcome back. Even though you only got to the end of the path before you were lured back in!

Seems to be a bit of confusion here chaps, if you go back to my original post you will find that I was going to put the trains away for a while but was going to stay on as an active member of the forum, I am still interested in trains but just got a little bored with the layout, no way would I have let my membership of this fine forum go regardless of being an active modeller or not. Not quite the same, but I did pick a CB up for the car back in the summer, as on the car club runs we always used to use PMR radios but they lack the range and clarity that a decent CB setup gives.

The whole radio scene does seem to be coming more popular again this century, everything is cyclic as they say :)

I don't think 27meg CB will ever die, still lots of nice SSS sets getting aroud that cover the 26 to 28 meg bands, no doubt the reason it has become popular again is because there is a decent 11 year skip season in progress.

Brings back the days during the 80s and 90 when I used to chase DX, spoke to people in 37 US States, Indonesia, New Zealand, Japan, Iriyan Jaya, Canada, Hawaii and the best of all was copy with some American GIs located on an Island in the Bearing Strait between Alaska and Siberia.

CB gave me more enjoyment than any other hobby and I used to love learning about how other people lived and the great geographical aspect of it.

Hop you enjoy the new CB so have fun
