Friends,

I have now closed my account on Facebook, it just demolished the time I had on the internet!

Regards Peter.

It has its uses
Commercial companies use it has a selling and marketing outlet
Equally, some insist on using it for primary contact

It can be useful when something goes wrong and bring it to their attention
A relative bought a jar of food for Christmas, opened it up and was unable to use it
Posted it on their facebook page, the retailer removed the message, and sent them compensation the following day...

I know what you mean Peter.  Time on facebook is less time on this forum or actually modelling.  To be honest there is some tosh put on there.

kind regards

Dave

I understand that dissing Facebook is one of the trademarked characteristics of "grumpy old men" everywhere.

But spending time on Facebook doesn't mean you do less modelling, unless of course you mean cooking a nice dinner has the same effect, or meeting friends at the pub, or pursuing any other sort of recreational activity beyond railway modelling!

Facebook is a useful way to keep in regular contact with people around the world. To share things with them, from jokes to photos/videos of things that make you proud. There are plenty of railway modellers who do just that with Facebook, as well as rail enthusiasts who like to discuss their interests with others of like mind.

Like alcohol, social media is only a problem if it stops you functioning normally. There's absolutely no reason why anyone needs to spend more than a couple minutes a day on Facebook if all they're doing is replying to instant messages and looking at photos of grandkids on the other side of the world. Just like alcohol, if you find social media is eating into your life to the degree it's causing a problem, then yes, you're using it wrong. If that's the case, then Peter, quite right, cut it out of your life just as an alcoholic cuts out alcohol. Well done for making that decision, which can be hard for Facebook-addicts who're spending hours and hours of time there, to the detriment of their lives.

But please, everyone else, let's not turn this into the usual Facebook-bashing thread oh, so boringly common here and on RMWeb.

Cheers, NeMo

As a grumpy.. remember the good things about facebook, tindr and all the other stuff.

It keeps the 20 and 30somethings from sitting in the pub playing crap music loudly and being generally irritating (you know -- like we used to do  )

They don't half make it difficult to totally remove your account; over a fortnight!
