Title: RNAs just like HEAs??
Post by: mickster04 on December 21, 2015, 07:31:35 AM
I have been hunting around for Railfreight HEAs, and I can't help but notice that the RNAs look very very very similar in every aspect except for the barely legible coding....

Has anyone used these as HEAs and what success did you have, and aside form those who, knowing the wrong coding, would hate it, is there any reason why I couldn't use the RNAs as HEAs?

The original RNAs were HEAs just re-coded before the hoppers were removed.

My understanding is that the RNAs were quite quickly cut down into the "standard" nuclear runner by removing the hopper. Luckily, Taylor Precision Models make a very easy kit for these. I'd encourage you to get one or two of these kits if nuclear trains are your thing. They're a mix of Peco frames, plastic bits, and some etched brass details.

A must for anything in the BR blue era, at least (after privatisation the rules on using barrier wagons were relaxed and I don't think they're used at all nowadays).

Cheers, NeMo

I successfully converted 15 of the Railfreight RNAs to HEAs by removing the data panel decals and replacing them with HEA decals purchased from Fox Transfers. See the image below for the result.
