Title: Coaches for Fairburn Caledonian livery tank
Post by: austinbob on December 09, 2015, 08:21:46 PM
Just bought one of these handsome Caledonian livery tanks.
What would you recommend for a rake of coaches for this loco?
:beers:

Pendolino coaches ... they're about as legitimate as the livery for original usage  :P

Well thank you Mike but, as you probably well know, that was not the answer I was looking for!! Quite amusing though.
Does anyone know what coaches the actual Caledonian liveried Fairburn pulled on its preserved line?
:) :beers:

I would suggest maroon Staniers but that's only a guess.

Oh... I'm so pleased you said that. I've got some of those. Don't need to spend any more cash.
So.. when I get some trains running on North Hampshire preserved railway I don't want any comments from you about my beautiful blue Caledonian Fairburn hauling Stanier coaches. Hee Hee!
:) :beers:

I'd put it in front of some mk1s in blood and custard as most preserved railways have a few of these kicking around, it is a nice livery and will go well with any other kettles in black or green, they are well finished by Farish in this livery and it bears a passing resemblance to CR carriages' colour scheme.

The  railway that this loco was in this livery was the Lakeside & Haverthwaite railway in the lake district. This photo shows blood & custard coaches in the background so i suppose is fair to say that it ran with them.

There is a long and fractious discussion  on this loco here:

There is also a picture of one of the loco pulling a blood & custard ? Mk 1.

The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway has the following coaches according to Wikipedia:

5 BR Mk. 1 Tourist Standard Open coaches
2 BR Mk. 1 Second Corridor coaches
2 BR Mk. 1 Brake Second Corridor coaches
1 BR Mk. 1 Brake Standard Open coach

Pictures seem to show them in BR Crimson and Cream.

Hope this helps!

Yup, definitely Mk1 stock. Some in Crimson and Cream and some in an odd unlined crimson livery that probably bears as much resemblance to a real livery as that on the Fairburn.  :P

Good catch. I think that Crimson is actually an authentic BR livery though. Mk1s with corridors were given Crimson and Cream liveries and Mk1s without a corridor were painted in unlined Crimson. So they should have four in Crimson and cream and six in Crimson with no lining :)
