Title: Unfunny Stand Up Comedians
Post by: Flakmunky on December 09, 2011, 10:33:15 PM
Just watched tonights Live at The Apollo and found someone worse than Patrick Kielty... Andrew Maxwell...

I didn't think this was possible! The list of comedians I find funny is far, far longer than the list of those I find unfunny....

Then I wondered whether it was just me....

Which comedians do you find unfunny?

Roy 'chubby' Brown - I love rude jokes, but he goes way below the belt and beyond, sometimes just down right nasty....

Jimmy Carr - Saw him live at the Colston Hall in Bristol, very funny - for the first half hour, it then just got really boring and samey - i was glad to get out of there come the end...

Agree  with 4X2   Roy   ''Chubby'' Brown  i  love a good joke but he  takes it  too far which  i find boring once i've heard his terminology once i  think  we  all  know what i  mean,  he's  a funny  man   anyway &  could still   entertain well  without  the  act he persues.

I saw Craig Charles in stand up wen I was at Uni at the Student Union and after about 5 minutes he became an annoying voice in the background! Most people actually had their back to the stage throughout his act...

I went to see Chubby Brown in 1996, the night England beat Holland (4-1... Or was it 5-1?) and he came on after th break and told everyone the score... the whole audience disbelieved him and informed him they felt he was overweight and of indeterminate parentage.

My other memory of that night was he wasn't as funny as the audience...

I find the only person that can have me laughing is Peter Kay, the rest I rarely even break into a smile.
Perhaps it is an age thing, I don't know.

The likes of Les Dawson, Frankie Howerd and the Big Yin's early years would have tears running down my face and my sides would physically hurt with laughing so much.  I can't remember when I last laughed like that  :(

A family member of mine was hauled up on stage for a audience participation bit with jimmy Carr (almost literally) my mrs's step brother, he's in a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy but despite how his disability makes him look he is sharper than a tack and the wheelchair jokes flowed jimmy Carr loved him and invited him for drinks and photos after, he said it was one of the best shows he'd had in weeks, sometimes the comedian has to feel the moment as much as the crowd,,,,

I always liked jethro, and those who know him shep wooly (maybe got name wrong he's my dads fave)

I also saw live at the apollo and agree with what has been said,he was not at all funny,Rich Hall on the other hand was.
I must say though,Peter Kay's latest dvd is not as good as the others and I would recommend not reading his latest book if you are about to watch the dvd. They tally almost word for word, honestly.
One of my favourite comedians of the minute is Rhod Gilbert,he goes on rants about the tog thing with duvet covers(still not sure about it meself either),washing up powder, womens errr pleasure tools and his experiences buying them, womens underwear as well and other things.Just a very funny chap and the thing is,whether you believe him or not,he makes you think its true.
I used to be a fan of Chubby Brown when I was about 14,which was a few sleeps ago but find it now is just stag party nonsense.
I saw Jim Davidson at the Doncaster Dome a few years ago and after seeing countless dvds and videos,he was absolutely fantastic. When we got out my face and throat hurt because I laughed so much.
On Comedy Central a few years ago,a chap who is more a writer of comedy than a stand up comedian was shown, his name is Geoff Green, very funny man, even portrays a cat as having a lisp,in a relationship with a woman and regrets moving in because all his mates were envious of his single life prior to moving in,mostly just life as it happens, some call it observational comedy.
Also,Ed Byrne and that bald bloke who shouts a lot,Andy Parsons.

Agree about Rhod Gilbert, but does he have to shout so much? ::)

Why do comedians have to swear so much?????

It doesn't make a joke funnier!!!!!

My father-in-law and I went to see Jim Davidson, a couple of years ago in Skeggy, and to be honest he got on my nerves after a while, purely because of his effing and blinding all the time. He was telling similar jokes to the ones I've seen him tell on telly, but he added swear words, and to be honest it spoilt the jokes.

The same can be said about modern comedians as well. I've watched them on pre watershed programmes and they have been very funny, but then watched them on post watershed 'comedy' slots and they've just effed and blinded their way through a slot, not funny at all!!!!!!!

Just my 2'penneth worth  ;) ;)

Regards

Neal

P.S. I don't find Ricky Gervais very funny at all.

I second that!  I'm not too keen on how American humour has taken over on TV, but I do prefer the American "The Office" compared to our version.

Agree about Anderw Maxwell at Apollo - not amusing.  Have to disagree about Ricky Gervais and the Office tho - funny in a very cringy painful way and unfortunately often true to office life.

But, at the risk of feeling my age, where are the likes of Dave Allen now?

On the other hand, feel British satire is still alive and kicking - did enjoy Have I got news for you before the Apollo.

Oh couldn't agree more, HIGNFY is brilliant. I do also like Mock the Week and that programme Hugh Dennis presents (the names escapes me at the moment).

I also think we do Sitcoms better than anyone else, well most of the time anyway, or is it that I'm getting older and don't get modern comedy, like The Phone Shop etc.

Regards

Neal.

It might be me getting older or perhaps attitudes are changing, but I just dont find alot of modern comedians the slightest bit funny. I can still watch Morecombe and Wise, Tommy Cooper and Dick Emery and wet myself even though I know what is coming next. The only shows of the current period that really make me laugh are I'm Sorry I Hav'net a Clue' from radio 4.
For listeners to Clue, my opening move is Googe Street.

That's something I really miss being in the US...  I used to love those shows.  I should check out iPlayer.

Les Dawson is still a great comedian...

And Chaplin's comic timing is superb... Still...

To move away from the gibberish and get the thread back on topic for a moment ::) I have to disagree with the following:-

Quote from: Flakmunky on December 09, 2011, 10:33:15 PM

I didn't think this was possible!

I thought Patrick Kielty's "Live at the Apollo" routine was hilarious, one of the best I've seen in the series!! Describing his own people as "a better class of murdering b*st*rd" than the Muslims was quite cutting as well as funny  :smiley-laughing:

Roy Chubby Brown should have given up years ago, the only people who find him funny these days is the neanderthal types, and his jokes rely on the language to be funny. I don't mind swearing in comedy, Frankie Boyle uses it to good effect sometimes (for those that have heard/seen the comment about him looking like ONE of The Proclaimers  ;) ), but it's a bit sad when the joke doesn't work without it.

Who do I find unfunny? Where do I start?!  ;D

John Bishop
Rob Brydon
Michael McIntyre (I could gleefully kill him he's so irritating)
Lee Evans (a bad Norman Wisdom rip-off)
Ross Noble
Ricky Gervais (The Office was good, everything else since . . .  )

One really funny person not mentioned yet - Tim Vine. Good clean silly humour, one-liner after one-liner, corny but he has me in stitches  ;D

Speaking of Jim Davidson, one of the funniest things I ever saw of him was a show that was on late at night that he did, many years ago on telly where he had Zippy and George from Rainbow.I still vaguely remember this and thoght it was absolutely hilarious with Zippy being as blue as Jim and being told off by George.

My brother in law is also called Paul and also loves Tim Vine, goes to see him twice when he comes to the Fringe, something you're not telling me  :smiley-laughing:
don't see the attraction with Vine myself  :(

Funny coincidence because my misses is from Scotland (Edinburgh) so it's a possibility  :smiley-laughing:

She doesn't have any siblings though so I think you're safe  ;)

Tim Vine's is a silly humour so I can see why it wouldn't suit everyone, I'm a bit mad though  :P

Did anyone see the Tommy Cooper Christmas show which was followed by the Morecombe and Wise Christmas show that was on last night, they had me and SWMBO in stitches, much better than most modern comedians I'm afraid.

Cheers

Hi Neal (& all)

Tommy Cooper,
Morecombe & Wise,
The Two Ronnies,
Dick Emery,
Billy Connolly (sans swearing)
Dave Allen......

Dare I go on?

With the possible exception of Rhod Gilbert...most modern comedians are not that!!!

Later;
STU in KNID.

I never really liked Dave Allen but the trouble is most comedians of that period were also not that great. We just don't remeber them (or try not to) - Cannon and Ball anyone ?

I think Sturgeon's law applies as ever. (*)

Ricky Gervais, acts ok but not funny.
Not by a long shot!

There are a lot of good ones out there and as many who are no longer with us.

The late Spike Milligan is still one of my favourites.
Try reading 'The Bible according to Spike Milligan' and not laugh out loud, I dare you!  ;D :smiley-laughing:

I knew someone must like him otherwise he would be working in McDonald's!

His Apollo routine was the best material I have heard him deliver... But I wouldn't describe it as 'hilarious'. I honestly do wonder how he has survived as a comedian.

Agree with you on Michael McIntyre, he is annoying... :)

When it comes to comediens only two names stand out for me.....
Bill Hicks and George Carlin.........
Both funny but more to the point....thought provoking through their humour

I find most 'comedians' nowadays extremely unfunny, as they think that shouting, swearing or gurning into the camera = laughs. Not so.
I used to love Have I got news for you when Angus Deyton chaired it, but Miranda Hart??? She's as funny as an STD.
You have to keep your wits about you, but for sheer quickfire comedy check out the Marx Brothers and the Goons.
American comedy never appealed apart from Cheers and Frasier. The American comedian Steve Wright has me in fits of laughter too - he is just so deadpan. :smiley-laughing:

I always got the impression that Sarah Millicane only did a stand up routine whilst suffering a particular heavy bout of PMT,she's funny with it though. She also presents Live at the Apollo next saturday night.

Rhod Gilbert is on Channel 4 at midnight tonight.

Chris Rock is on comedy central at 12:50am,I've plussed that already.

Dave Allen was, in my opinion, the original observational-comedian. Also the subject of his humour was usually the mildly ridiculous, not the mundane that most comedians now rely on.

"We rely on time, everything we do is ruled by the clock. We get up by the clock, we eat by the clock, we go to work when the clock tells us to, we come home by the clock, and at the end of the day we go to bed by the clock. We do that day after day for 50 years, and what do they give us when we retire - A CLOCK!"  :smiley-laughing:

Like alot on here i'm also not a fan of Ricky Gervais, some of the films he's been in haven't been too bad but the rest aint really for me.

It's very rare that i find a comedian that annoys me but tbh Andi Osho doesn't really do owt for me.

My fav stand up comedian by far is Jimmy Carr, the amount of brilliant Material he has is just amazing, he was by far the best i've seen live. I'm also a big fan of McIntyre (Hence i've seen him twice and already got tickets for next year), Lee Evans, Peter Kay, Frankie Boyle, Sean lock, Ed Byrne, Dara O'briain, Rich Hall, Russell Howard etc etc...
