Title: New use for Bagpipes
Post by: Dorsetmike on November 14, 2015, 06:17:51 PM
The Travel interchange (read bus station) in Bournemouth has been plagued with rough sleepers and other antisocial types overnight, the latest solution is to play Bagpipe music over the tannoy system, and it's working.

I must say I did prefer marching to a pipe band in the RAF compared to the more usual brass/military band.

Took me a while to work out why a bus station would need sleepers, and why their lack of smoothness would be an issue. Mind you it is early Monday morning and only on my second coffee...

I was told on Friday that someone had taken a set of pipes to the International Space Station and that pipes have now been played in space for the first time.  They were then going to be placed in orbit (the pipes, not the player) as opposed to being returned to earth.

The thread is now open for a whole host of disparaging comments.....

I see, the clause in the Outer Space Treaty (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty), forbidding states party to it from placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit, has been suspended?  ???

Yes - and the player is now the worlds bravest man. He played the bagpipes ten feet from a airlock  :bounce:

I love the fiddle, accordion and chanter but I find the bagpipes as pleasurable as I dunno what.  It's an incomprehensible hideous noise I just can't stand  nor do I comprehend anyone who likes it.

I love Scottish music but I fail as a Scot, I absolutely HATE the sound of bagpipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...best place for them IMO is to displace folk, then out into outer space (but that's not a good advert for me in case anyone hears it)!

Love the sound of the Pipes and Drums, when played well it is one of the most stirring and rousing sounds in the world.  Highland Cathedral is a particular favourite of my (Wiltshire born) wife and I do so enjoy when the boys play the Black Bear whilst marching out of the castle as they bring the Edinburgh Tattoo to a close.
Braw stuff  :D

I prefer the sound of the Uileann pipes, myself.

Nothing like the Scottish bagpipes played in Scotland! Best heard from our house, some 100 miles South of the border. :DD

Seriously, as a tinnitus sufferer, the drones* of the pipes really do my head in.

* Is that the right word for the bits that play constant notes while the chanter** is played.
**Again is that the correct term???

Fred Morrison is my favourite piper.  Here he plays 'The Train North Set', which is supposed to evoke the feeling of a train journey from Dublin to Dromore.  It was written by Tom Anderson.

For me it's always been Troy Donockley ever since I saw "You Slosh" a few times, and now with Nightwish, as well as Iona - quite different styles 8)

Fred Morrison is my favourite piper.

You are a man with fine taste, if I may say so, though in my opinion Liam O'Flynn is the master.

Have you come across this one of Mr Morrison playing 'Rip the Calico' on the Transatlantic Sessions?

Well, yes.  But I have a problem with those sessions because I really don't like a certain dobro player...
