Has any one been watch this series, I think it is superb. The first two have been superb programs I am looking forward to tomorrows program. Ch5 9.00pm
Yes we've watched them and enjoyed them.
I find Tarrant annoying but if you ignore him then its a great series.
Watched them too and found them interesting :)
Still no sign of the Phantom Flan-flinger though sadly? ???
Paul
Yep - I've been enjoying them too
Sounds good... unfortunately CH 5 here is the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission), so we might be waiting a while. Maybe not.
Extreme railways, eh? Not quite like extreme skateboarding or stuff like that, I guess :uneasy:
Is it a repeat? I seem to remember an extreme railway prog a while ago which had the Indian Konkani route. Have missed the recent ones are they every Friday? If so I could go back and watch.
It's a new series, Steve, and it's on at 9pm tonight Channel 5. If that's too soon, maybe you have Channel 5+1?
I wonder if they will feature the train from Wollongong to Sydney which I have to get tomorrow. It would fit the 'extreme ' bill.... slow, usually dirty and packed.... often with some of the most unsavoury characters you'd ever want to meet.

I think i know what you mean, George. I met one of 'em in Wigan once :-X :-*
Did anyone ever tell you that you're a very funny man, Mick? :D :P
I had Mr Tarrant as a passenger on one occasion - he wasn't half peeved :veryangry: :censored: because we were delayed by a freight train at Reading and got him home a few minutes late!
I often think of that when seeing the delays he (seems to) gladly suffer while making these programmes!
:D

That's different! I am much less stressed by delays when I'm working, after all I just think " I'm getting paid by the hour so any delay means more pay for the same work!"
Last night's episode was very interesting, although I agree with those who find CT annoying. He complains rather too much, but, fair play to him, he got things in perspective when he was talking about the human cost of Stalin's railways.

I too have enjoyed the programmes, the only thing that bugs me are the "Blue Peter" moments which crop up in so many adult programmes. Is is absolutely necessary for the presenters to drive the train? "They're going to let me have a go!" etc. etc.
Peter.

I think it must be de rigeur, Peter, as Snr Portillo is doing that very thing on the Orient Express tonight ::)
"Sorry for diminishing your visibility" As he was handed a hi-viz jacket, brill! :smiley-laughing:
Gerard
Put your self in the position of the presenter, would you not ,if possible want to drive the train?

The Portillo wardrobe seems to have become even brighter in this series. Parrots must be envious.

Of course! But that doesn't mean the whole world has to watch!

I am not 'having a go' at you (or anyone else here) but just wondering why all these people who would 'love to play driver' don't give up their 'day job' and join the railway like I did?
I had the chance to drive a Formula 2 car around Brands Hatch once and thoroughly enjoyed it. Convinced me that I did not want to be a racing driver.
Similarly I have had countless cab rides over the past 40 odd years, and taken the controls a few times, but I do not kid myself that I would have made a good train driver.
I have met quite a few drivers who would make good TV presenters and might even have had a go at it without it needing to be their job.
Can't see the problem with an entertainment programme where the presenter entertains by driving a train.
I see it as a bit like karaoke. Many may try to sing but few would achieve fame on the X Factor.
George

The joys of 'multiculturalism'?

Do you not think others have tried? Really!! What a pretentious :censored: you are Trust me, there are people on this forum who do jobs equally as important (if not more so) as you perceive yours to be.

I think that is a bit OTT! I do not know about Western Princess, but I was offended by that remark! The majority of us on this forum have a job that is important in some way, whether it is to the employer, the public or just ones self! David.
Come on guys, let's cool it, don't forget that THIS IS the friendly forum. If you have strong views on any subject, state your point but please don't try to force others to agree, everybody has an opinion and they are all different.
:thankyousign:
We have "Talk Talk" so was able to catch up on all three episodes--a fascinating series.
On another lighter note (well, it wasn't really)...... I mentioned earlier that the Wollongong to Sydney train should feature on the show. Well I made the journey yesterday (thankfully I'm home again), and the four car train only had one toilet, the door of which would not close.
Which meant it stopped at every station to give passengers the opportunity to get off and use the station amenities!!
The train was supposed to go to Bondi Junction, which was my destination, but just before arriving in Sydney, the announcement was made that it would terminate there..... so they could fix the dunny door! Talk about the trip from hell
Extreme trains?
I don't have to look very far!
Going back to the thread title.
My wife and I discussed the series last night and we both felt that Cris Tarrant treated all 'locals' as peasants and humiliated them by his 'holier than thou' outlook on them.
OK they don't have the same luxurious life and modes of transport etc that we enjoy(?) but they do deserve our (C Ts) respect
