Title: Ideas for a 3ft rake
Post by: sparky on August 08, 2015, 01:39:39 PM
I have a 3ft spare slot in my storage sidings that I am looking to fill....I am modelling BR blue Western region South Wales with occasional rule 1 slightly later locos...lots of 37,47,31,47 ,Westerns etc...I already have 4 DMU sets and 2 full rakes HST's. The loco hauled rakes are a set of HAA coals, some PCA cements, mixed SPA and BAA steel,a small rake of Civils, some rail freight vans,a freightliner rake and 2 sets of MK1 passenger rakes,a set of parcels coaches and a set of res post office coaches...allowing 6 inches for the loco I have 2ft 6 to spare...my initial thought is a short rake of 5 MK2a coaches with a Class 33 when dapol release them representing a Portsmoth harbour to Cardiff service but I would welcome other suggestions..I really need a rake of oil wagons but at that length it would be too short to be realistic....

What about a slow scrapyard train? i.e. old condemned wagons/coaches (even locos) being towed off to the scrapyard.

Good thought...lots of old locos from all over the network would head  to Ebbw Junction yard sidings before onwards for scrapping..I remember some old 3rd rail class 74 and possibly class 73 being held there.

The 33 and MK2a's sounds good.
you could also pop a short train carrying stone in.

You must get some 16 ton mineral wagons. Filled with coal, these are an essential part of modelling South Wales during the 70s. Fun to weather into the dilapidated state. Lots of manufacturers out there, as well as kits, and you can often pick up old ones for very little money. I picked up 6 of the Peco ones last weekend for £2 each! So building up a big rake won't cost much if you don't mind ferreting them out over time.

Yesterday I got a couple of the Parkside Dundas 24.5 ton mineral wagon kits. I'm thinking these will add some variety to the rake, which already looks the business behind a 'Hymek'.

Cheers, NeMo

How about a Hymek with a rake of Peco Ford Pallet Vans to/from Bridgend?

I would agree the Mark 2A coaches would complete the passenger services
You can certainly purchase the BSO just now, you might also want to consider a FK, then all you would need are the three TSO
The TSO is due towards the end of this month

Maybe slightly elastic time wise but there were milk trains from West Wales - Ideal for some Western power :)

I like Nemo's idea of the mineral wagons. I'm not a blue period modeller but like the idea of the overlap.

Mind you, I'd fill the yard with an A4 on a fish train, if it was Eastern!!  ;D

A4 on a fish train - did I say (ex) Durham Lads are canny lads?

There are some really good photos on here that may provide the necessary inspiration....

Russ you really have created a problem for me with so many ideas and not enough space...was just trying to fill my last slot until I saw all the options and am now working out how to extend my yards storage space to add at least another room for 5 or 6 more rakes !!!
