Title: "Do Not Alight Here" and other railway signs
Post by: NeMo on July 31, 2015, 01:27:41 PM
Hello all,

Looking for "Do Not Alight Here" signs as well as general diesel depot signs to be dotted about my layout. Any ideas on sources for these? Scalescenes don't seem to have anything. Sankey Scenics have a nice pack of depot signs but they're not customisable.

If I wanted to make my own, what sort of fonts/colours would be needed for BR signs?

Cheers, NeMo

Br used the Rail Alphabet font, so if it was a BR sign it would use that.

However, I seem to recall that Dawlish Warren had them and they were hand-painted signs - possibly not of BR origin.

Off the top of the head here. In a different field, not railway I mean, I have created signs in the past by using cut and paste in a graphics program. If you have enough examples of the style you want, it is usually possible to scan those to a high DPI and find most of the letters you need. Others can be made up by cropping and combining what is available. An advantage of working this way is that you also have correctly configured sign frames/edges available to work with. If you can find examples on the net you may not even need access to a scanner. You also don't need to look for a particular font or colour. It's all right there.
Don't forget the final size your particular sign is going to end up and keep a realistic idea of how much intricacy you need to incorporate.  (probably much less than you think)

Hope that helps... Allan.....

There's also a British Rail Light

Yes, have perused their selection and own a few packs of their sticky posters. But sadly nothing suitable/specific to a diesel depot.
