Title: What couplings do I have ?
Post by: Simon. on July 23, 2015, 05:31:42 PM
Hello,

Just received some Dapol easy shunt couplings to fit onto my loco's and wagons. So far I've tried them on (all Graham Farish btw.) Class 37 fitted fine, FNA Nuclear flask wagons fitted fine, Intermodal Bogie Wagons fitted fine.

EWS 08 shunter seems to fit ok but feels easy to pull out ?

EWS Class 66 I think there different couplings as they don't seem to want to pull out ?

EWS HAA hoper again they don't seem to pull out ?

Do I need these  http://www.ehattons.com/57679/Dapol_2A_000_009_Magnetic_coupling_conversion_kit_for_non_NEM_couplings_ex_NSPARE9_/StockDetail.aspx (http://www.ehattons.com/57679/Dapol_2A_000_009_Magnetic_coupling_conversion_kit_for_non_NEM_couplings_ex_NSPARE9_/StockDetail.aspx) to convert the 66 and hopers ?

If they are the Rapido couplings with a spring behind them then yes,you have to remove the old coupling box & replace it with an NEM socket.

  have a look here,

it`s not hard to do,ive just replaced the coupling box on a Farish 16t steel mineral wagon.

My 08 has very sloppy NEM pockets and the couplings move freely from side to side, so much so, the whole coupling can move to one side when it passes over a magnet rather than just opening the 'mouth' of the coupling up. I put tacky wax in mine but may still add some tiny shims down either site to restrict movement.

These are not NEM equipped.

Certainly for the HAA hopper, yes. Please see my in depth guide. http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=19829.0 (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=19829.0)

The 66 may have the coupling box built into the bogie, it may require some cutting to fit an NEM pocket. You could do some bodging permanent fixing of an easi-shunt into the coupling pocket to minimise cutting but I'm not an expert on these matters!
