Title: Do coreless motor models run qucker than older types?

I'm having a general running session and I've run my 4 modern kettles (Fairburn, Duchess, WD Austerity and Merchant Navy) and now moved onto my diesels (new Deltic, Blue ribband 47, 37 & 24). I've noticed that to achieve the same speeds round the track, they need more power, it this because the coreless motors are more efficient or are they geared differently for better haulage?

Yes, both, but more the latter - the gearing ratios in diesels is completely different to steam.
