Title: Video on You tube
Post by: Graham Walters on June 02, 2015, 10:44:32 PM
I've recently picked up some video's on youtube of a guy called Alan Plumb building an N gauge layout, this evening I got to this one and couldn't believe my eyes at what he was doing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKY3scPIMd8#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKY3scPIMd8#ws)

It was it seems all down to him getting delivery of a new loco he had ordered at around Christmas time, like may I was sympathetic to him because his SWMBO had taken him to task over buying the new loco.

THEN
I came across this, his first Video in the series :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKY3scPIMd8#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKY3scPIMd8#ws)

You need to >> to about 20min to see what I think was the real reason behind his SWMBO getting a bit annoyed with the model railway building !

I think he must have flipped his lid what a nutter he needs to see a specialist. But I'm sure our Ozymandias can rebuild it he likes a challenge ,what a waste of a good layout someone would have payed good  money for that .I know we all feel as though we could do that and start again but that was a bit over the top.

The little head which pops up from behind the monitor around 20:25 is presumably not his SWMBO?

When I saw the first video I was angered by his wanton destruction of what appeared to be an excellent layout, then by the end of the second one was feeling a bit sorry for him.
He undoubtedly has the skills and knowhow. What he does not have is an understanding wife, and who can blame her when she sees her front room turned into a workshop like that, and the room to put into practise what he loves to do.
It made me even more glad that I have a 4th bedroom for a dedicated railway room, can shut the door and be in my own little world. Oh, and a very understanding wife who lets me do as I please in there so long as the railway stays in there. Plans to extend a branch along the landing to the 3rd bedroom were met with a firm

Cheers,
Alan

You can no longer copy and paste the url at the top of the browser as you will get the error page, click on the "share" button below the video and you will get something that begins with https://youtu.be/xxxxxx (https://youtu.be/xxxxxx)

If you want to embed the video in the page then you need to remove the "s" from https otherwise it will just be an active link.

This is one of his videos using such a link:-

Oh wow.

I'd seen some of his videos before. He stuck me as... a bit strange. I can't remember which video it was but he was scratch building a road bridge to go over the track. After he finished making and painting it, he realised it stood a bit too tall. Instead of just cutting off a bit from the bottom, he trashed it and started over...  :hmmm:

And now, after spending a year building his layout, he gets into an argument with the SWMBO over the cost of a loco and hacks the entire layout to utter, complete destruction with a spade...

If he'd decided he wanted rid, why didn't he just sell it? His videos on the layout all reached 4 figure viewings, someone might have been interested...

Unstable much? :help:

Just goes to show that you have to consider the feelings of your parents or "other half" at all times with any kind of hobby that takes over a portion of a room (and at other times ocassionally to  :)). Once they start to panic, it's not always easy to win them back. I always try to make layouts that are mobile now and can be dismantled into sections and stored. Keep tools and equipment in tubs or boxes that can be stored neatly'ish. Hoover up regularly, etc.!

I'm not sure the videos on here are being shown in the correct order but yes, he did smash up a very nice, well built layout. Why? He could have sold it or even given it away to another enthusiast maybe, but no, he took a length of wood to it and smashed it up.
If I understand correctly it was after a disagreement with his wife over something quite trivial.

What was that implement , was it a gravedigger's shovel ?

At least he wore a yellow vest, safety first !

Looking through the video listings of Mr Plumb on YouTube, they go backwards in numbered sequence with the first (ie last) one being the "destructive" one we're all talking about.

If you go back though the list to the first one it's about the location, track plan and thinking behind the scheme for a folding layout.
However, the same video goes on to show the "construction" site of the layout.
We see a smart well presented lounge with good looking suite, modern TV, nice carpet etc etc.

Unfortunately the layout occupies virtually all the floor space, tools and materials hide much of the furniture and a sheet of baseboard foam obscures the window - in other words the lounge seems to be out of commission long term.

I suspect the other occupant of the household (wife?) would feel more than a little disenchanted with all this - and rightly so.

I've watched this guy almost since day one.  Kind of surprised he's not been mentioned on here before, I actually always meant to post up a link because he's got an interesting layout, and with some 'er quite interesting (unusual) techniques compared to the "norm" which 99% of folk seem to stick to.

...It's a strange conclusion to the affairs but looking back not wholly surprised it ended as spectacular as the build-up.  That said I saw the destruction vid a day before it was posted on here and there was obviously something going on in the background.  I must admit I've smashed things up before with allot of profanities, but never posted them in public!

I think we may all be second guessing what's going on in the background as we all seem to be going off what's on youtube.  I wouldn't have blamed his partner if that was the living room -I always thought it was but when I saw it degenerate over time I just assumed he was single.

I hope the guy is OK as it was quite a show. There's more to life than fiddling with hobbies.
