Title: Cumbrian Mountain Express Duchess
Post by: ScottyStitch on May 20, 2015, 10:53:12 AM
Hello all,

I'm looking at getting my first Farish Duchess.

The Duchess of Hamilton in the Cumbrian train pack, being obviously depicting a preserved engine, is the decoration still suitable to be run on a '60s layout, i'e pre-preservation?

I  certainly hope so! :worried:

Yes it will be. The livery is the same as in BR days - the detail that is likely not to be is the electrification warning flashes which may be a later style (original ones used red flashes on white background, later the flash changed to yellow). It remains to be seen if they come with red or yellow but I think they looked yellow from the pictures I saw.

Easy to change if it bugs you - Fox do a sheet of these and they can just go straight over the ones on the model to cover them.

The only other thing that stands out in the pictures is the shiny brass coloured axle box on the rear bogie - not sure about this - doesn't look like any 1960s picture, so I suspect the loco didn't have this in those days. Easy again to blacken over with a touch of paint.

Cheers,
Alan

The model has the earlier red & white OHLE warning signs.

Happy modelling.

Regarding the coaches in this set, can someone tell me what the running numbers are please? I'm building a collection of Mk1s, but if they've just used pre-existing stock, I may not need to buy this set...

Thanks for that. Looks like it's still on the want list, then.

I will be selling on the coaches (at less than retail cost) when I get my set shortly, so if you're interested...........

That just makes me wonder why you bought the pack, unless it was to get the loco in that livery/crest :hmmm:

The buffet car was previously issued as 374-110

So only 2 new numbered coaches.

Cheers

Yes, just to get Hamilton in late crest in that colour.

Plus, train packs are a good deal if you can sell on the bits you don't want/need.

That confirms my thought. I already have the buffet, but I could sell that on.

I'm hopefully going to set eyes on one tomorrow, I'm a blue diesel man, but a shiny ex-LMS steam loco would be a nice bit of fun.

ScottyStitch, thanks for the offer, I may well just buy the whole thing, but if I get cold feet, you might get a pm.

I gave in and bought the set today - given that my long-term plan is a BR blue-era layout based on the S&C, it would have been silly not to...

Must say I'm most impressed - just running the loco in on a basic oval with first-radius curves - wasn't sure what it would make of that, but it doesn't seem to have a problem with it. This has now doubled the number of steam locos I have!

Do these Duchesses have coreless motors? It is very quiet - more so than any of my diesels.

I think they do, and that near silent running is making me consider selling a few of my BR blue diesels to fund a few more kettles if they are going to be this good...

Yes, it's coreless driven, in line with all new Farish steam (the A2 will be an exception and use the slightly older tooled tender drive from the A1 without coreless motor).

Cheers,
Alan
