Title: Any good for heat shrink sleeves?
Post by: petercharlesfagg on April 28, 2015, 08:19:18 PM
Friends,

Still researching my console wiring needs and found this for using with heat shrink sleeves.

What are your thoughts?

Peter.

That would work but something without a naked flame might be more advisable, like a hot air gun, the type used for paint stripping.

i use me temperature controlled soldering iron, suspect the gas torch might not concentrate the heat only on the HS sleeving, if you are not accurate with it,  it might not do the cable insulation much good.

Good for the odd Creme Brûlée . Plus you don't want to set fire to the stuff.

I think its best to avoid naked flames in a confined area Peter. You don't want to set fire to any of your good work and have to start over. Or worse still have to call the fire brigade!!!
:beers:

I used the shank of my soldering iron just above the tip, quick 'wipe' over the heatshrink was enough to do the job

Managed to do this little lot . . .

. . . as well as the corresponding D-plugs to connect it to the layout without burning anything :)

Very tidy Paul. Do you want to come and do mine? My layout doesn't quite resemble a rats' nest, but I do a lot of point to point wiring. And no George, it doesn't involve horses!

Peter, I agree with all the comments about that butane burner. At the very least, if you must go that way, use a butane powered soldering iron (which is basically a device almost exactly the same as the one you have posted, but with a soldering tip covering the naked flame and being heated by it). A cordless soldering iron, if you like.

I recently purchased one from aldi which is a little beauty - it has three soldering tips, a hot knife, a reflector, and a heat blower tip!

Cheap, too.

Friends, knowing hiow dangerous I can get with a soldering iron, I have the blisters as proof, I have decided to buy this little gadget plus some butane gas refill.

I think that you're  having us on, Peter. Please divent go under your baseboard or panel armed with that!
