Whilst waiting for hopefully what will be my last model railway order for a little while, I thought I would tot up how much I had spent on my layout since I first started building it back in September 2013.
In terms of locomotives, rolling stock, track, buildings, and scenic items the figures are :-
2013 - £1,433.75
2014 - £2,938.05
2015 - £654.29
-------------
Total £5,026.09
The spending should now slow down dramatically as the layout is almost complete, and I have no room for any more rolling stock or scenic items, and I have probably gone overboard on the number of locomotives I have purchased – 31 at the last count.
How does what I have spent compare with other members spending on their hobby (obsession) – bearing in my mind that virtually all my purchases have been VAT free, otherwise the figure would have been much bigger.
You could probably buy a small nearly new car for what I have spent on the railway, or enjoy a cruise in luxury stateroom, but I don't regret the expenditure as hopefully it will continue to give me years of pleasure, and it is an Asset after all.

I wish you hadn't posted this - it makes you realise just how expensive our hobby can be.... And if SWMBO gets a view of this, parts of my layout and personal anatomy could be seriously curtailed !!
:'(
I dread to think how much I have spent over the years but I would guess your figures are conservative.

If I said I have nearly 100 locos without even counting anything else I believe you can draw your own conclusions.

With 100 locos you have either got a big house, a big shed, or you have taken over the Leyland Motors Factory - where do you keep them all?
I've kept a detailed spreadsheet from day 1 and the total is about the same, just over £5k since starting in 2009 :)
Clare couldn't give a monkeys either, whatever I've had to spend she's had the same as that's the way it works here. So whether it's gone on clothes and shoes, 1/144 scale Corgi jets, or her My Little Pony obsession that's entirely her choice as the railway is mine
As a bonus she loves playing trains too when the layout is assembled :D

with about 150 locos and DMU 200 coaches and about 600 wagons collected and a large layout over 20 years
i have a spreadsheet of what everything cost but not totaled up as i think i would have a heart attack at seeing the amount

I've done the same thing on my spreadsheet, I don't want to know the total amount even though I don't have as much stock as some people. I know it would seem like an awful lot of money if I did add it up.
The only comfort is that if I did need to raise some funds my collection is worth something, even if it will be worth less than what I paid.

Have to say that my wife never queries what I spend on my model railway, and likewise I never query her Amazon orders which she sometimes charges to my Credit Card and sometimes to her own.
Have been on a couple of cruises (from Tenerife) recently and have another one booked for this October, and she enjoys those and even pays half the cost.
On a Saturday when I play snooker then disappear to the railway room, she enjoys a massage in the Apartment, and in the evening we nearly always watch the artist in our Bar, usually ending up with dancing which I am obliged to join in although I am not a very good dancer but at least it's 60s and 70s music where anything goes..

I had a complaint from SWMBO, oh ho , , , she said "but they are both black, cant we have something a bit more interesting "
Wot you recon, a Princess Coronation for her as well ? :) :)
A good idea folks, just about to start my own list,
So far about £210
and I thought I was being extravagant placing an order for a further £110 this am.
( a 3rd black one, I may be in a bit more bother soon lol ! Anyone do me a repaint commission :) )
Think I'm a bit less on the expenditure, but think you folks are being to liberal with the political references , EU should stop
But we're only being Social d, d , , oh drat that doesnt work, oh I mean drat they are long gone
Oh I dread to think. I've been constructing this layout for 2 years and am nowhere near complete. I do have most of my loco's, around 70 currently and will be looking to have close to 100 by the time I'm finished. Some new Farish 40's, Dapol 33's and 50's will be added as they become available.
I have many rakes of passenger stock but need 1 more rake of MK2a's and 2 rakes of Mk2f's (when Farish release them).
I have many freight wagons but need 2 rakes of coal wagons and a few other mixed wagons to add to the collection. Also looking for a complete breakdown crane train when it's released. Other than that I think I'm done. With all the price increases lately I'm glad I focused on this part so early on. My main costs from here on will be track and scenery. I think if I knew what I had spent and what I will be spending in future I would scare myself to death.
I run and maintain older vehicles and the wife is fine with me spending money on this hobby rather than new vehicles so that's cool.
I have a major expense coming up that is split between vehicles and model railways. I'm going to be spending around $50,000 on a dual purpose garage that's insulated and climate controlled. Half will be a car workshop and half a model railway room, I'm currently getting estimates for it now. Here's the kicker, I had one estimate for $26,000 and the wife said is there something wrong with it, it sounds too cheap.......

Obviously in a smaller place than JBQFC ;) :zippedmouth:

Hehee, nice one :)
I've just called her in to look and she said

;D
That's in old money before the price hike, same with my other hobby, £40plus for a1/35 scale model AFV.
Hope you guys have it all insured, by the by can I have all your addresses, need to get your Christmas cards sorted..
Cheers john.
Hmmm, I shouldn't have looked at this thread. 50 locos (roughly £70 each), 60 coaches (roughly £12 each), 150 wagons (£6 each). Not far off £5000 as well. Whoops! The vast majority of it, 90% or so, all fits in one cardboard box.
Oh, and that's only the N gauge stuff. Add in HO, OO and O gauge.... Oh dear!

The Poond will probably be worth even less now they have to re-tool all the presses for Nic now...

...Seriously though I don't count now. Used to when I was into cars, but would never share that with anyone because someone else comes along and says "I spent more", and that's not really what it's about.
Spread over the past 25 years, on average I've been buying 2~3 powered N-gauge units (locos, multiple units/railcars/trams etc.) per year.
The problem is I only started out in N-gauge last year...
Mind you very little of what I have was bought new at normal retail prices, and much of it is Japanese anyway which is generally pretty cheap. I think I've scratched most of the backlog of "want" itches now (famous last words)...

Now there is an interesting subject that you raise !
How to equate what one's Dad spent on Frank Hornby's products way back then for your birthday or Chrissy
and what I am now about to spend (maybe) in my second childhood ! ?
25 years ago was approximately when I gave up trying to acquire Hornby, Lima and co (actually more like 28). I did work out (possibly on this very forum) that the Hornby Class 25 I bought around 1986 costed - taking inflation and the N-gauge loco premimum into account - roughly the same as the BachFar 25 I bought last year. Disposable income is somewhat higher, luckily, though if I were concentrating solely on British stuff I'd probably have much smaller quantities of stock.
I used to restore classic cars for a hobby until an old neck/back injury made moving big lumps of metal too much of a problem. So at the wife's suggestion (Lovely girl) I converted half my garage into a railway room, and a lump of the proceeds from selling my last classic went into the "Train Set & Layout" pot..
Been working on the layout for about 18 months, have about 20 loco's a few rakes and lots of scenery stuff, and glad to say there is still a nice sized kitty left to buy more with and to complete the layout.
Used to keep a spreadsheet when doing the cars, but only as a record for when I sold them to make room for the next one, but never totalled them as it would have been depressing..
But will go so far as to say, I made a good profit when I did have to sell them. :claphappy:
Talking of old money, I have attached below a copy of the Invoice I received when I bought a new sports car back in the 70's.
What I forked out then would only buy me about 4 or 5 new N gauge locomotives at today's prices. Notice on the invoice a full tank of petrol was just £3 97pence!
(http://i379.photobucket.com/albums/oo231/Tdmak/Model%20Railway/Spitfire%20MK4%20Invoice%20001.jpg) (http://s379.photobucket.com/user/Tdmak/media/Model%20Railway/Spitfire%20MK4%20Invoice%20001.jpg.html)
Talking of old cars, my passion is 90's Tyotas (OK not classics!). In one car I was the 2n'd/ 3rd owner in the uk after 10 years but when I tidied the boot up I pulled the carpet and found two copies of Japanese newspapers from 1994/5, several dozen parking tickets, wasabi packets and some strange sweets and packets of dried noodles all from the very first owner going by the dates on them!
I am staying out of all this political talk - I am Independent :)
