Title: Thunderbirds are go!!!!
Post by: Newportnobby on April 02, 2015, 08:38:29 PM
Will there be any others like me tuning in to see what the new Thunderbirds will be like on Saturday evening? Let's hope it's F.A.B. :)

Ah - but the question was whether you'll tune in to find out.
I saw Sylvia Anderson on the BBC morning news the other day and she gave it the OK.

I will tune in to see. Just seen a few snippets, one thing i don't like, they have spoilt the theme music. If it's not broke, why fix it?

Captain Scarlet was my favourite programme. I didn't really enjoy the CGI version and gave up on it quite quickly - it just didn't seem to have the atmosphere of the puppet version.

Hope the new Thunderbirds is a success though

Bit like Thomas the Tank Engine, when it went in cartoon mode it lost all its magic, filming the running of actual model locos was ten time better that the apology it is now.   :(

Was in the UK on business this week and saw some of the hype on TV. I am stunned and excited that the original guy who did the voice of Parker is reprising his role in the new version. Not bad for an 89 year old!

Good on him, or as Lady Penelope would say "Well done Parker"

And for the aficionados...

Thunderbirds and Dads Army on TV on a Saturday night. All we need is Basil Brush and a double bill of Tom and Jerry to complete the line up...

Progress huh?   :bounce:

better than most of the 'reality' or 'talent' stuff that's on there normally.

add a double bill of Porridge and that wouldn't be too bad, with a few drams  :)

Didn't get the Thunderbirds thing when I was younger.  I watched Captain Scarlet, Stingray, Joe 90 (my nickname for years was Joe 90 ) and Terrahawks. Love each of them dearly but if anyone tried to make a computer re-run I'd not watch now.

I don't want them to re-make anything these days.  There's so many channels full of repeats, some repeat same time in 2 to 3 hrs -why not fill the space with re-runs of proper shows, the choice must be endless!

Must admit as a Naval Architect I did like this...

I have to admit I don't think it will be as good as the Supermarionation(?) ones.
I just loved Terrahawks as there was so much adult humour in it :D

UFO was far more growed up. I seem to recall it going out late in the evening and at least one episode was slightly "naughty". Or maybe that was just wishful thinking on a highly impressionable Teenager....

I quite liked the old puppet series..Space Patrol, Fireball XL5, Stingray and of course Thunderbirds. However, I'm not a fan of remakes. You'd think that there was enough inventive minds in the world of TV and Film to come up with new ideas, rather than making second rate attempts are reproducing old classics.

Well, at first advert break and general opinion in the household (two parents who remember when the original series was first transmitted, and two adult children who like watching the DVDs of the original series) is that the new 'Thunderbirds Are Go' is absolute pants and a DVD of the original series is going into the BlueRay...

Struggled to stay with it to the end.

The old puppet series may have and their strings on show but at least it looked slightly believable. I wonder if this will prompt any re-runs of the old series (Space Patrol, Thunderbirds, Stingray etc)?

maybe there are still strings (very well hidden) that held the balloon from TB2

Overall I thought it was pretty good really. They at least stuck to the original launch sequences and Grandma's cooking still sucks :)
I reckon they tried to cram too much in and the music was horribly intrusive.
To me, Lady Penelope was a younger Madonna lookalike and I agree with Fireman Wallie about Parker. Some adult content still in there (not sure whether many adults know what a HALO parachute jump is, let alone young viewers)
The jury is also out on the introduction of Thunderbird S(hadow)
I won't comment about Brains (although it was probably best to remove it before watching) :hmmm:

Most intriguing. I was a massive fan of the show as a kid to the point of building models and blowing them up while filming it with a standard 8mm movie camera. I was given the entire collection of episodes on DVD for me birthday some years ago.

I also have watched every episode of Captain Scarlett on YouTube (bit different to earlier Anderson productions - people actually got killed), and every episode of Space Patrol also on YouTube with Larry Dart, Husky, Slim and Marla. When I was a kid, it used to screen around the same time as Anderson's Fireball XL5. I preferred XL5 then, but looking at them both now, I prefer Space Patrol.... it's actually technically more correct!

"Scanner viewer workin' CHECK! Gamma rays on CHECK! Yobba rays on CHECK!"

And the really cool thing was that Husky the Martian was always thinking about his stomach.  :)

I'll keep a look out for this new Thunderbirds thing. Doesn't sound too crash hot but I will view with open mind.

I watched it when I finished work.

Characters - more wooden than the puppets.  Several changed in many ways. I was surprised that the movements of the characters were often a shuffle. Childrens cartoon series have come a longgggg way in this respect. I have been subjected to many of the new offerings, when helping out with the school run for my grandchildren.

Storyline - Seemed very 'clipped'. Each rescue seemed to be carried out in about five minutes.

Now, I step back and look at this in perspective. This is a reboot for the modern age. So the fact that the characters have changed should not be considered. The target audience will probably never know about the original series.

As for not understanding what a HALO jump is. These days, even young children seem to know how to look things up on Google..............

Ahhhhh, UFO ... great series, wonderful models ... a proper SF show.  Just a shame the Yanks couldn't understand it, and pulled out of buying series 2 halfway through the pre-production ...  Anderson had a fortune invested in it & needed to get his money back - hence Space 1999 was born with all the UFO series 2 models ...  Unfortunately, it developed without the UFO decent scripts or actors

Jerry

If I remember correctly, it wasn't that the episode was naughty, it was just that the story line was considered (in the late 60's, early 70's) to be too scary for the time that it was being broadcast. The episode was called 'The Cat with Ten Lives', but I think at the time it was just known as 'The Cat'.

I actually enjoyed the Thunderbirds episode - so much so I've put a series link on the Sky+ box to record it on the CITV channel (8am Saturdays if anyone is interested). As an update to the original, I think it is quite good (and SHMBO says that I am a bit of a luddite when it comes to modern stuff) and I was very pleased that it paid homage to the original; as I have previously posted, there was even a representation of the 'lemon squeezer' in Thunderbird 1's launch bay, and I think the updated FAB 1 was particularly good.

Quote from: Pengi on April 04, 2015, 10:16:37 PM
Quite enjoyed it but explosions were so much better in the puppet series.
The thing with the original explosions were that they were just that - models that they blew up whilst filming with high speed cameras. When the film is played at the normal speed, the action is more realistic.
I can recommend 'Filmed in Supermarionation' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Filmed-Supermarionation-DVD-Gerry-Anderson/dp/B00NP0N1EY/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1428268253&sr=1-1&keywords=filmed+in+supermarionation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Filmed-Supermarionation-DVD-Gerry-Anderson/dp/B00NP0N1EY/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1428268253&sr=1-1&keywords=filmed+in+supermarionation)) to anyone who is interested in how they made all those wonderful series.

The new series will still use proper knitted puppets with better animation than was possible in 1969, and has been made with much involvement from Peter Firmin, who along with the late Oliver Postgate produced all those wonderful kids programmes under the 'Smallfilms' name

Post by: Ben A on April 06, 2015, 03:24:53 PM

Hello all,

I am quite surprised at the number of people expressing disappointment; I thought they made quite a good fist of it with some knowing nods to the original (and Stingray!) while at the same time updating it to make it fresh, relevant and fast-paced enough for today's kids.

The vehicles are really good - what changes they have made are well thought out and seem justified to me (ie fold down wings on T2 makes it take up a lot less space in the hangar and allows the pods to be closer together, while I love what they do with the three angled "arms" on T3) but they keep all the best features of the originals - not least the fonts used for their names and numbers!

Bearing in mind too that, strictly speaking, I don't think those of us who remembered the original are *quite* the target market!

It's not perfect - realistically, could anything recreate the magic felt by a 6-year-old watching it the first time round? - but I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one.

cheers

Ben A.

I thought it was ok, liked the reference to 'my favourite tv show' showing Stingray but it all felt rushed. Everything happened so fast - the launch sequences, the rescues. It was all in, out and no time for shaking about!  :D

The original built the tension, with the soundtrack, the worsening situation and  with sweating puppets!

Shan't be watching again (and the Rolls CAN'T fly! :veryangry:)

All today's posts moved me to try and find a way of watching an episode here in the U.S. ITV Player a no-go as I am not in the UK and I don't have one of those apps that disguises my IP address. But success on YouTube, episode 5 'Fireflash' is to be found inside its entirety!

Verdict (from a huge fan of the original series) was a thumbs up. The pace is much quicker than the original, which I guess is a sign of the times. The producers clearly believe that today's kids have a minuscule attention span! Not always a bad thing, but this episode lacked the build up of intensity that the  Fireflash' episode had, albeit in a much longer episode.

In summary, I loved the characters, loved the modern interpretation of the classic boarding and take off sequences, loved the CGi, but it was all a bit rushed.

So a big thumbs up. The only negative was that this episode did not feature Parker or Lady Penelope. My research shows that Rosamund Pike is the voice behind a younger version of Lady Penelope. Now that, I am 100% sure, would be F.A.B.

Are all the episodes based on stories from the original series?

I managed to get a few segments up on YouTube too, and didn't much like what I saw. Mind you, they were only little snippets. I'm not a great fan of CGI cartoons, even though all the 'real life' movies that I really like employ it heavily.

The 4th Mad Max movie by Aussie director George Miller was released here last week, and, according to him, all of the stunts are real - supposedly the only CGI is Charlize Theron's prosthetic arm. So I might just go and have a look at that.

Actually, since I posted this, and thinking about Chetcombe's post, I investigated YouTube a little more carefully and found all the episodes to date. I watched half of the space one and all of the Fireflash one.

While I found the Fireflash episode watchable, and could see the similarity to the original, they all seem too rushed (which I guess says something about the attention span of today's kids). There are aspects of the animation which I also found annoying. Their feet all seem huge, and when they walk away from that airliner at the end of the Fireflash one, they seemed to be towering above the thing like giants!

Not as bad as I initially thought, but I certainly won't be jumping through hoops to watch it.

Not entirely. Jerry Anderson normally worked with roughly 22 minute episodes. If you look at the other shows he did such as Captain Scarlet, Terrhawks, Stingray etc, they were around the same length. The original Thunderbirds was an exception and was deliberately made to be twice the length of his normal episodes at the request of the commisioner. That is why the launch sequences look they are happening in slow motion. You can also see that the episodes often follow a pattern with an initial rescue attempt that fails necessitating the use of a back-up plan.

It is sometimes joked that the Thunderbirds should have learned to just use Plan B the first time. ;)

Yes, Rosamund Pike does a good Lady P and they still have the original voice of Parker after all these years. :)

No, most are original although Fireflash was a indeed a direct homage. You can see the 21st century flavour as Kayo is a much more proactive heroine than Tintin's damsel in distress.

Absolutely! Watched for the first time this evening, and really enjoyed it. Obviously still a kids programme, but lots of nice touches that made it feel very much a homage to 2001. The quote mentioned, the spinning space station, the getting-locked-outside scene, the "eye" of the computer, and of course being Thunderbirds there was the more positive and upbeat ending.

So far as pacing went, it felt about right to me. It wasn't hurried at all, but at the same time, there was very little filler, just the odd jokey moment or background scenery shot. Compared to a lot of children's TV these days, this show seems positively Oscar-worthy!

Cheers, NeMo

Sylvia and Gerry (and their talented teams of course) beat the CGI stuff hands down with their "Supermarionation".

I rather enjoy the rebooted CGI version. It is different to the original but I like that they have a distinct take rather than just slavishly copying the original.

In one regard, it is actually closer to Gerry Anderson's original vision for Thunderbirds in having a faster pace and a 25-ish minute running time (like most of his other shows). Thunderbirds was extended at the urging of Michael Grade to a 45 minute running time which explains the long, repetitive launch scenes as well as slo-mo feel to some parts. It had to be padded to reach that running time. TBAG cuts it back to the originally intended running time and packs the action in faster.

To me it was the redesigned vehicles and uniforms (unnecessarily so, in my view), the sex change of some of the characters and so on.
It just wasn't "Thunderbirds" in my opinion, any more than a Britannia is a 2-10-0 9F. The boilers might look similar, have the same number of wheels etc. but in truth it was all very different and it didn't work for me.

Having watched a few of the cartoon versions, I've mellowed on them a bit and don't think they're too bad.

However, as a young railway modeller back in the 60s, the scenic work on all the Gerry Anderson stuff was inspiring.

I recently watched a fair chunk of the original episodes by borrowing my friends DVDs.

Even after the initial shock of finding that my favourite episode fom my youth was in fact the very first one (the one with Skyflash aircraft mysteriously crashing and then saving Lady P who was on one), I still kept going and enjoyed them very much.

Having said that, some of the attitudes on display would never get passed censors now. I mean the episode with the huge building catching fire, a fire caused by a "women driver", can you imaging how badly that would go down now?!

Yep, that goes for most stuff these days.  :'(

However, the models and real chemical flame and explosions remain impressive.

The airliner in the first episode was Fireflash, by the way, and TinTin was on board, not Lady P. :beers:

I think you are referring to the 'Fireflash' atomic powered airliner, rather than 'Skyflash', but I'll forgive you - this once!!!

;)

As to the Thompson Tower fire being caused by a woman driver, why not? They do, after all, make up around 50% of drivers and therefore it is as likely that the driver would be female as male.
No Lady Penelope was NOT endangered on the aircraft - it was Tintin Kyrano, Jeff Tracy's servant's daughter.
Oh do please try to keep up with the plot!

But of course statistically speaking you are correct.

I was more thinking of the fact that the "women driver being bad" stereotype was used as the reason for the fire starting.

Anyway, none of that detracts from a great show

I'm of an age where 'Supercar' was followed by 'Fireball XL5', 'Stingray', 'Thunderbirds', 'Captain Scarlet' (aka Captain Scaredalot as we used to call him at school) and the probably the greatest British sci-fi of all time - UFO.
Every few weeks all through the 1960s there was a new offering from Gerry and the team... it was great TV as I'm sure those who lived through it will confirm. I can think of only one failure - the series 'Joe 90' (although the ridiculous 'Secret Service' was even worse and was cancelled after just 13 episodes and it never even got network release)
In fact, and returning this to railway modelling, the ONLY redeeming feature of 'Secret Service' was that one episode included an O gauge Hymek on a parcel train.

No she wasn't. She was driving down into the 'parking lot' when her foot slipped from the brake to the accelerator causing her car to crash into another vehicle. That started the fire which eventually destroyed the whole building.

I started off with an open mind towards the CGI remake, having been such a fan of the original puppets (seen on repeat obviously, I ain't that old! :D ).

After watching the first three I haven't watched any more, just not as captivating as the old ones with no tension whatsoever. Another classic ruined by modern animation and being aimed at those with the attention span of a gnat

Great viewing for fans and modellers.
