Friends, obscure question that might get more interesting!
What would be the N gauge scale diameter and height of cement storage silos?
Secondly how many would there be in an average depot?
Not a spoof, Peter.
Sorry Peter but at Northfleet we only deal with Cement Manufacture rather than local depot storage...
I'll have a look later on my PC as I think I have some N Gauge plans for a store facility but the long and short of it is that I do not think there is a standard...
Someone on here might be able to tell you different else find a picture on the inter web and scale it from there.. I don't think anyone will be able to tell you that it is to small or to large...
Interesting... you're gonna put one one your layout, then, Peter?

Watch this space for future developments in the VERY near future! Peter.

if you go on the RPA site
http://railphotoarchive.org/ (http://railphotoarchive.org/)
and search 'Inverness' you should get some pics with the Blue Circle depot there in the background.
hope that helps

G'day All, when in doubt about goods/freight and railways, I always go to good old: Goods & Not So Goods An overview of railway freight operations for modellers at:
http://mike.da2c.org/igg/rail/index.htm#bash (http://mike.da2c.org/igg/rail/index.htm#bash)
If you go to this specific page you will get details for bulk cement distribution depots that are supplied by rail:
http://mike.da2c.org/igg/rail/12-linind/cement.htm (http://mike.da2c.org/igg/rail/12-linind/cement.htm)
Hope this helps, it has got me out of a bit strife more than once!
Regards, Andrew G.
I typed Cement Storage Silo into my browser and got these...
I need to go to the cave shortly, I'll take a look on my PC because I think I have more out there. Btw there are a lot of silos for sale if you want one at 304mm to 1 foot scale...

Hi Peter
Here's what I have on Hafaton. I cannot tell you how prototypical it is, or if it has a suitable number of silos, but it might give you some ideas.
Thanks
Dan

G'day All, again. I am assuming that the originator of this thread, Peter, is planning to build a bulk cement distribution depot, i.e. rail wagons bring in bulk cement for storage and then distribution by truck, compared to a cement works where cement is created out of limestone etc and then distributed in bulk by rail. This will have some bearing on the size/type of silos being used. Fortunately the Goods & Not So Goods page covers both.
Regards, Andrew G.
I think all he's doing is trying to find a use for the Fairy liquid bottles he's been saving :confused1:
Hi Peter,
Sorry but i couldn't find the Cement works drawings I had but here are some dodgy photos of my first N Gauge Blue Circle works layout.
The buildings were kind of makey-uppy based on pictures of various cement works. Made of cereal boxes, painted grey, very small windows.
Distant silos were centres of toilet rolls which when resurfaced, painted and the appropriate gear put on the roof could look quite acceptable

That's an absolute beauty Dan!!!
Here is my more modest offering, based fairly closely on the Blue Circle terminal at Northenden (now defunct). At trial fit stage...

Cheers Jon :)
The Choates Lane Rail Silos for Cement were taken directly from the drawings that we used to build the real rail silos for Castle Cement's site at Ketton in Rutland.

I still have the drawings of the whole site. These include the pre-heater towers, road silos, rail silos, kiln and clinker storage.

I think all he's doing is trying to find a use for the Fairy liquid bottles he's been saving :confused1:
VERY, VERY close, not washing up bottles but denture cleaning tablet tubes!
I have (6) if anyone would like to construct silos, for free! (P&P extra!)
It was my intention to use them but I have changed my mind! They measure (1") inch diameter x (7.1/2" LOA).
Anyone interested?
Peter.
These are the arrangements at Horseblock Lane, loosely based on Bletchley's cement distribution element. (No room for the aggregates!)

The silos are made from Knightwing diesel fuel tanks with the fillers filed off and one end flattened on a large file to allow it to sit flat. Other storage tanks are from Vitamin C/Steradent tablet sized tubes and the tubes that come with Smarties lollies.
Cheers, Neal.
not sure if these are any help

apologies, appears the 2nd and 3rd links have expired.
I got them by - advance search - diesel locos - then input location as Inverness.

Oh Peter, I think it was all a ploy just to get us all posting pictures ;)
Mind you, I did enjoy seeing the pictures from others posted. :thankyousign:
The Walthers "Medusa Cement" has been around for some time https://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3218 (https://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3218)
The silos are 1.5" diameter by 6.5" tall. Frankly, by the time I'd faffed around scratchbuilding the unloading shed, elevator, baghouses and piping, I'd as soon get the Walthers kit and bin the denture cleaning tablet tubes (or reconsider them as horizontal non-pressure fuel oil storage tanks??)
You can see mine in the background of this shot:
(http:// [/img]
I cannot recommend the weathering technique you can see on the shed roof as it involved redepositing the smoke from a catastrophic house fire. :-[

Sounds false to me
Friends,
Since no-one wants the tubes I have for an English layout, is there anyone modelling North America who would like some corn silos?
Peter.
