Post by: jonclox on February 24, 2015, 03:46:04 PM

Anybody had some that refuses to 'glue anything to anything'?
I suspect its a couple of duff tubes but Ive never had it happen in the past  >:D

Bet if you smeared a bit on your glasses if you wear them it would stick :sorrysign:

I had a similar experience so now I only use "Plastic Weld"!

Just to give a bit of a constructive response and not give you any further stick .  I remember humbrol cement in tubes has been criticised before over the years.  I haven't used the tube type cement probably for 20 years now.  Switched to revell contacta professional and for the past 15 years been using slaters mek-pac or plastic weld or similar also (the liquid bottles, sometimes it contains MEK).

...if it's the yellow bottles similar to contactca or their glass bottles you're using then I can't really comment.  I don't use much humbrol stuff these days, their paints certainly aren't a patch on what they were and I often prefer revell or tamiya products now.

Hi Jonclox I agree the stuff in the tubes won't even stick to its self it's useless.
I remember when I was a kid I used to build Arfix kits and you could literally  see the bits of the kit melting together as you applied the glue.
Health and Safety or the EU have put paid to that it probably had a chemical in it that actually done the job but is now banned thus rendering the glue useless.

Thanks RTS and Bob Tilbury.
Yes it was the tubes that seemed duff but the squeeze plastic dispensers seem a bit better. I also agree that much of the Humbrol paint has changed for the worse.
I now have some Revell contacta on order

not just the EU the state of California has banned polly glues even mail order , if you caught with the stuff its a criminal offence , apparently the bad lads are cracking it down and flogging it on street corners (class 1 drug )

...California regs drive allot of environmental things (the Brussel Sprounts don't always dictate everything!) but I digress.

Much better product is the chemical solvent bottles and a tiny natural haired brush.  The only time not to use it is for very teeny things you can't hold or end up disturbing with the brush.  For those I apply a tiny amount of contactca and let if grab -then wash over with the liquid solvent to properly weld the job.  I know you're supposed to let the solvent fully cure, but if I use pure cement / contacta I leave for a day or so before handling, with the solvent I can be putting primer or the first cot of paint on on the job almost within half an hour, no probs.

...Just be flipping careful if it does contain MEK, it's got horrific side effects!  I had problems with it a few years ago (don't think they all do contain MEK though).

I've always considered Brussel Sprouts to be a health hazard, especially the horrific gaseous side effects
