Can anyone recommend a supplier of complete number transfers for southern region steam locos - 50's era

Try Fox transfers, a large variety of regions and eras.

N Gauge Society will supply modelmaster transfers with SR numbers when the shop reopens.

Just to correct a potentially damaging bit of your answer, the NGS shop is open again, albeit in temporary mode, at www.ngsjoin.com (http://www.ngsjoin.com)

Only for Society goods (kits, bits for the kits and RTR rolling stock) and some third-party items at the moment, but its a start.

I use fox transfers. They go on well and look good. I'd recommend them to anyone.
