Background. This computer needs to run for another year or so before I can buy a replacement PC. It will then be used for the storage and use of nothing but the new layout, my stock, and any rubbish that relates to my modelling, and downloaded videos.
The problem at the moment is that I cannot get the graphics from on line videos such as You Tube to run without jerking and stalling all the time. I have recently installed an AVG computer maintenance programme which is superb. It tells me my graphics card need replacing as it cannot cope with the system. I was running on XP but did a free Microsoft upgrade to Vista. The graphics is registertng a score of just 1.9
The computer is an Advent 3214 runing AMD2600 Athlon XP Processor, but Microsoft said it could handle Vista.
I am running Virgin at 50meg but about to upgrade to 100meg for our main computer. We are currently receiving up to 70meg in this area.
The graphics card is a Radeon 9000 series
1024-9197-00-SA
128m DDR TVO.
It has D type connector on the back.
What I need is an upgraded better graphics board but I don't want to spend silly money. I look on eBay and see cards from £2 to £900. I have no idea what the hell looking at...to me they are just boards.
Has anyone got a suitable graphics card they would be willing to sell for a few quid, or could anyone point me in the direction of what I need?
Cheers folks
Bob
Give Novatech a call & explain ... they should be able to recommend a range of cards between £20 & £50 that will do you; maybe even less ...
Please don't take this post in the wrong light, but I'm wondering why your existing machine needs to go another year before updating?
As far as checking out this forum goes, I mostly use mobile devices, but am aware that a home machine in the home office or computer room is important.
My point, is, I guess, that powerful laptops are now cheap, and whilst I don't know about the situation in the UK, discount outlets here sell PC towers for next to nowt.
So I wonder why you have to wait a year or so before updating. Okay, it's a pain transferring files, etc., but that'll have to be done either a year from now or just now.
Curious, more than anything else!
George :beers:
The ATI 9000 was a decent card in its day should be able to cope with a Utube video
Your PC will only take AGP graphic cards which are now obsolete though it should be possible to get a S/H one off ebay
Your upgrade to Vista may have been a mistake. I would check the video card drivers and make sure the latest available for vista is installed
Another thought, does the graphics card have its own fan and if so is it still working and that might be the problem, easy enough to change the fan on graphics cards, or if it does not have a fan are the cooling fins clear of any dust etc it just might need a dusting down.

This is indeed true. I write as someone who works with computers for a living (everything from putting them together from parts to writing the arcane code which powers the code which powers forums like this), and for the record computers suck. On the plus side the hardware is pretty resilient, provided you never drop hard disks onto an unyielding surface (been there done that when hard disks cost actual money), and I write as someone who has never payed much heed to the dire warnings about static electricity when handling parts.
You should be able to get spray cans from somewhere (no idea where in the UK) which blast air into nooks and crannies, removing accumulated dust and other items. Tip: do not do this in the vicinity of valued N-gauge stock.
Quote from: N Gauge Bob on January 20, 2015, 11:41:02 AMWe are currently receiving up to 70meg in this area.
Is your computer/local link confirming this 70meg ? Or is it a generalised 'area' statement from Virgin.
If you download the YT and replay from disc does it still stall ?
I too wonder if it was a good idea to down(!)grade from XP to Vista. My experience (going back to before the PC and DOS) is that, as fast as the manufacturers speed up the hardware, Microsoft adds bloat to new Windows versions which negates the speed advantage. My old XP machine runs faster than the much newer machine I bought for my wife, which came with Windows 7 installed.
I have the problem you describe on an old Netbook, so I use the Firefox add-on DownloadHelper to download youtubes as flv files and play them back in a media player.
To my mind, Vista gets an undeserved level of criticism, basically because a) they established a new access control mechanism that users generally don't understand (among many other new things), and b) it's an even-number release ... (I understand that My Little Pony has a similar problem in reverse (ie odd number series) !!! Amazing what's on the 'net ... ::))

Hi Bob,
Personally I'm still using XP as I refuse to buy a whole lot of new software because all my old software, including MS Office Pro, is not compatible with Windows 7. XP is a tried and tested OS which is stable. OK so Microsoft don't support it any more but provided you have good anti-virus software (I use AVG Internet Security) and you don't use Internet Explorer (I use Google Chrome) I see no point is replacing something that ain't broke.
As far as the graphics card is concerned I have an NVIDIA GeForce GT250 card which, despite being 7 years old and no longer available can still deal with everything that YouTube throws at it. You can pick up a brand new GeForce GT730 card for between £40 and £60 and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Just out of interest, how much memory do you have installed as this can sometimes be a limiting factor for graphics cards. You should really have not less than 4GB to give you reasonable graphics speeds.
As a former computer technician (I've now moved onto phone systems) I'd agree that Vista did get a bad press, mostly because so much was changed without explanation. - The driver and software incompatibility due to the increased security that affected a tiny percentage of hardware and users in the grand scheme of things were were a nightmare for those that suffered but one things for sure if Microsoft hadn't increased the security there would have been massive hacks that would have made the north korea <> sony spat look like a bit of a tiff!
The first thing to do is check is that the graphics drivers have definitely updated - though you've downloaded the new ones they may not have installed correctly, and the symptoms you are describing sound very much like what you would experience if windows was trying to use its default VGA driver which cannot use anything but the most basic features of your specific graphics card.
To check - right click on your desktop and goto "Personalise" then Select Display Settings in the personalisation dialog.
in the window that pops up, you should see a representation of your monitor, and below it a box with
"monitor name/model" on "graphics chip name/model"
the monitor name may be "generic PNP monitor" as vista hardly ever recognised specific monitors, but your graphics card should be listed by name rather than "default vga adapter"
if its correct, then we've ruled out the most likely cause and can look to other things, and if its not, then you'll need to re install the new drivers again.
Unfortunately I've binned all of my old AGP graphics cards or i'd have gladly popped one in the post for you to see if a different model was any better!

HPw19 wide LCD Monitor on Radeon 9000 family

Extend desktop onto monitor?
Why would I have this twice? I am confused...one saying 9000 and one saying 9000SEC
I certainly only have 1 monitor.

I've been using Vista on this laptop (cos it was already installed when I bought it s/h) for several years and it has not given me any hassle.
I can watch YT online using a 3G wireless dongle (but it gets a little buffery during torrential downpours !) so a 50M link+Vista should be more than enough !

I don't think Linux is going to solve N gauge Bob's problem. In fact installing that might just introduce more problems. If his computer was mine, I would back up all my files (photos, documents, movies, spreadsheets etc.) and reinstall XP using the installation disk or installation partition on the hard disk and start again.
I don't think the issue of Microsoft support for XP is going to cause any problems with a decent antivirus program installed and perhaps a malware program such as Malwarebytes.
Now, if N gauge Bob doesn't have an installation disk or partition then I don't know what to suggest. I think I would just bite the bullet and get a new PC. - Just my opinions...

Microsoft XP was/is a very respected operating system. Many Companies still use it. Vista was a bit iffy when it was first released (bit like some Dapol and Farish locos) particularly with lack of driver support. Much better in its final version. I suspect some of your current problems may be driver problems after you installed Vista. The Radeon 9000 series video cards and even a much slower broadband connection should be fine for utube videos.
Linux, for some people, rings their bells but most of the support and applications out there are for Microsoft. In my opinion Linux is an enthusiasts toy and not generally suitable for people like you and I who just want to buy a computer and use it without faffing about.
Enough of this rambling - best to find a way to reinstall XP IMHO.
I've been having similar problems to Bob. I have Vista on my laptop, which generally I am quite happy with, but videos are very jerky and the sound is crackly. I've been considering upgrading to Windows 7 to see if that will solve the problem. Is this likely to help or would I be wasting my time?
(No, a new laptop is not the answer! Domestic management has recently bought a new one and we can't afford another!!)
Cheers,
Chris
I got my laptop back in 2007 and to be honest, never gave any thought to the operating system. Turns out it was Vista, and, touch wood, it has not given me any problems to date. l have not noticed any of the UTube problems mentioned in this thread. Just lucky, maybe :hmmm:

Hi Chris.
I think it depends on how old your computer is. There is a Windows 7 compatibility advisor app http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20) which should tell you if you are going to have any issues with your hardware or installed software if you upgrade to Windows 7. Why don't you give it a try and see what it comes up with. If your computer is not too old it usually indicates that some drivers may need updating or that some software needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled after the upgrade.
If you go the upgrade route you need to back up any important files like, photos, documents, movies, spreadsheets, rail layouts etc. first.

Golly Bob I am anything but an enthusiast or geek :D just a bloke that enjoys trouble free computing the way it should be, the latest Linux Mint 17 receives 5 years of security updates and is like a much refined version of Windows XP.
I agree there are a percentage of geeky types that use Linux but there are also many business people that use it, one example is my Sons Prudential Company, he has a staff of over 10 people and uses Linux Ubuntu as a network system, like most Linux OS it is compatible with Windows
Linux Zorin, OS is designed to help people that have used Windows in the past, the Zorin desktop can be set to Windows XP or Windows 7 at the click of a button, hardly geeky stuff
Sadly people are afraid of something that they are not sure about but Linux is the best thing I ever did with computers  :claphappy:
Plenty of help out there for Linux users as there are thousands that belong to help forums, like model trains the users provide the best support, as a matter of fact I consider Linux support is way better than that offered by Windows  also over 37,000 mostly free software programs available that can do everything but make you a cup of tea.

I didn't mention anything about Geeks longbridge and I respect anybody's wish to use whatever operating they choose. I have used various versions of Linux Ubuntu in the past for technical interest and found it to be pretty good. But, it has its faults and difficulties like any operating system.
I know that many people knock Microsoft but, like a very large percentage of computer users, I have always found that the range of applications and support for Microsoft operating systems leaves anything but Mac OS standing. I think the majority of people go with Microsoft or Mac for that reason alone.
That doesn't mean that Linux is not an excellent operating system - its just a minority preference and not for the masses.
The fact that it must be around 99% of users have Windows or Mac OS must confirm that. (that's a guess by the way so please don't come back with exact figures on how many use Linux).

I have no experience with Vista, but I would guess that a later operating system is going to slow things down if anything. Is there any evidence that any Microsoft 'upgrade' has ever reduced the amount of bloat in the system? As I said earlier, my wife's Windows 7 system - with much faster hardware - is no faster than my XP. Do the maths ;-}
Thanks guys..that was an interesing few hours :o

I have used Microsoft for so long I think I will adopt the attitude of the devil you know...I don't do change...still trying to get used to the electric handbrake on the car after a year :worried:
The choices as I see them are twofold.
1......Replace the current graphics card with one from eBay...at the price this would be a cheap alternative.
2......Revert to XP.
I think what I will do is the above in that order. Try 1 and if that fails do 2.
I'll let everyone know what transpires.
Again many thanks to all...I love this forum

That's a very old card Bob and I think your existing card is well up to the job and probably not the problem - what do others think?

My card is definitely the problem. I have found a friend locally who has been able to drop my graphics card in his computer, and guess what....same problem as on mine. This coupled with the fact that Radeon ATI cannot download the drivers stating that then card is bad would suggest it really is the card.
Problem solved now. I found an old computer on ebay which works and cost next to nothing so that will do and I'll consign this one to the tip tomorrow!!!
