Hi Peter
I've heard good things about Windoze Movie Maker. Its free so you could give it a try. Also this link http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/best-free-video-editing-software-9-top-programs-you-should-download-1136264 (http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/best-free-video-editing-software-9-top-programs-you-should-download-1136264) has a review of some Video editing software.

I don't do video stuff myself - I'm a still photo enthusiast - so have no direct experience of such software.

Hello Peter,

I use Windows Movie Maker, you probably already have it on your computer

You can add titles, captions and credits to your video easily and you can trim your video to cut out any bad shots.

cheers John.

John, I have already tried that programme but it will not accept an MP4 video.  I checked the Windows Knowledge bank and it is not geared up for that format, unfortunately!

What I really need to do is edit the length because it is HUGE right now!!!

Thanks for the comment, Peter.

I would say windows movie maker is the best free one.

To get it to load MP4's you will need to convert them to AVI or WMV, a good free converter is here http://www.freemake.com/ (http://www.freemake.com/)

THanks, I have just tried to download this software and my virus checker went mad and stopped the download!

I will have to consider another alternative!

Really ??? I've been using it for ages and no virus scanner has picked anything up from it. Wonder if it's showing false positives.

Ow it will be because the installer offers you other software while installing. You just have to decline those bits.

Windows Movie Maker not too bad for smallish stuff,ok for short stuff not
major epics,I find it a bit iffy , maybe just my ageing pc.

I'm using Sony Vegas Movie studio, not free, think i paid about $49.95, whatever that converts to in real money. I use it to trim start and finish and save as MP4. It has far more bells and whistles than I need, but it does the job I want, maybe I'll try some of the other tools some day.

Hi there

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything Microsoft !! :-)

However, you could try any of these

http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/ (http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/)

http://www.openshot.org/ (http://www.openshot.org/)

http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/)

http://www.jahshaka.com/ (http://www.jahshaka.com/)

http://www.lwks.com/ (http://www.lwks.com/)

I think you'll find Videolan Movie creator is probably best, followed by openshot.

Cheers

Tony

Without wanting to start a 'who's the best software supplier war that's a bit hard on Microsoft and good auld Windoze old chap.. Seeing as half the world is using it! Or perhaps you're just talking about Video software. Maybe its something to do with the linux bit of your avatar name   :uneasy:

Oh and by the way I'm cool about Linux I used it myself a while cos it was free!!

Friends,

Thankyou for all the ideas and information.

I decided to download "Any Video Converter" then used the Windows "Moviemaker" programme to edit.

Not as easy as I had thought and I have completely cocked up the original BUT, the video converter was a blessing in converting the MP4 to .avi and the size from 41Mb to 4Mb!  Quality suffered a little but at least I could work with it until I creamed it!

Nevertheless I get the general idea and I will use it more often to learn the basics!

Thanks again, Peter.
