Title: Vietnam import tax?
Post by: weave on December 23, 2014, 01:48:11 AM
Hi all,

Just bought a model ship from Vietnam and wondered if anyone knew how much I'll be stitched up for import tax (to the UK)?

Have bought from Japan before and one thing was £35 tax and the other, same price, on another occasion nothing. Am aware of our non..can't think of the word so let's say stupidity when it comes to import tax but Vietnam is a whole new ball game to me.

The thing cost £80.

Be gentle with me if the news is bad, it is Christmas  :)

I would think that buying from Vietnam is the same as buying from
any other non EC country with regard to import tax and VAT, but as
these are not always charged in a consistent manner  I think it's
wait and see.

If it is marked for personal use and not classed as commerical, it isn't in one of he categories that attract additional duties, e.g. Motor vehicles, some electrical items, so you will most likely just be hit for VAT at the standard 20% (of the value declared by the sender, which is not necessarily what you actually paid) plus whatever charges Royal Mail add on for filling in the paperwork for you and delaying delivering it...
