Title: Goodbye
Post by: Geoff on December 03, 2014, 09:12:52 AM
I would just like to say to everyone on the forum goodbye, I have enjoyed my time on here and I shall miss you all, certain things that have happened have made me pack my bags and leave you all, I just hope every one has a happy life modelling.

It's a real shame that some of the Mods on here are forgetting what their role on this forum is meant to be and getting heavy handed.
George, your constant off topic posts are annoying enough but then you reprimand members for doing the same, double standards.
Caz, as a Mod all you seem to do is lock or threaten to lock threads.
Sprintex, well where do we start......
This used to be a really friendly forum where a bit of banter and pulling of one's leg was a great part of it. I appreciate the need for Mods and thank most of them for the work they do on here, sometimes a thankless task I guess, but can the others please lighten up and stop upsetting members to the stage that they leave.
Rob.

My 'sense of humour' (term used advisedly) is often misunderstood; a lot of seeds fall on stoney ground. Some people just can't allow themselves to smile.
Don't be put off by them; it's their loss.
Take a day or two out and then come back and regale us with your anal ogies (sic)

Best wishes

Sorry to see you go Geoff but I think you are taking Bealmans joke to far and you perhaps will re think about leaving after a couple of days I personally have had the mods No Names No Packdrill tell me off a couple of times for things I tried to post and I realise that they have a very difficult job to do for which they don't get paid .Sometimes things are said which another person takes in the wrong context and I'm sure that's what's happened here . So as I said please don't leave us I think that this is one of the best Forums going I really am glad I joined and have a great time learning new things an how others solve problems and seeing other people layouts I'm sure you will miss the Forum if you leave and hope if you do you will come back soon.
Regards
Bob

I have no idea what all of this relates to and I'm not particularly interested.

What does concern me is the loss of "friends"!

Whatever anyone says or does on the internet or elsewhere is entirely for them to judge whether it is good or bad or simply indifferent.

I sincerely hope that Geoff reconsiders but if not then in the same vein I wish you well Geoff.

Warmest regards, Peter.

Rob:

This IS the friendly forum. It's the reason I joined in the first place, and you only have to read the comments from new members to appreciate that is a major drawcard.

As to your comments regarding the moderating team, you cotradict yourself. You say that "pullings one's leg... and a bit if banter..." was part of the friendly forum, but then start blasting us for doing so!!!

All the very best,

George

No I didn't contradict myself, telling members that they've gone off topic when you are usually the one that goes off topic first, threatening to lock threads, constantly moving threads unnecessarily is not banter or leg pulling, sorry you don't know the difference !!

There should be an 'if' between the "you" and "don't"  ;)

If you work with children and teens, one of the things you have to explain to them is that there's a very fine line between banter and bullying. It's also a moveable line. What's banter to you can be bullying to someone else, and of course vice versa. Exhibit one: Jeremy Clarkson. Some find him hysterical; others obnoxious. He delivers banter, but whether you find it charming or insulting depends on your point of view.

Being funny in person isn't a guarantee you'll be funny when you write something. There are plenty of standup comics who're hopeless at writing sitcoms, and lots of sitcom writers who're not at all funny in person. The problem with writing is that it lacks the tone we add to verbal jokes -- so what was delivered by one person in a lighthearted way can be taken by the other person as an insult or a mean-spirited putdown.

I'm not saying don't try to be funny here (there's plenty of humour here) but at the same time it's worth reflecting on what you're about to write before pressing "post", and in return, if someone writes something that you think was insulting, think for a moment about whether it was genuinely meant that way. Chance are, no.

Now, shall we get back to our model trains???

Cheers, NeMo

There should be an 'if' between the "you" and "don't"  - " you if don't",sorry that's too clever for me !!

Really George if you're going to insult me at least try and get the spelling right ! I seem to recall that when you've had "differences" with other members in the past you have to have the last word so fire away, the stage is all yours, I've had my say.

Geoff, if you are still here.
Please consider who you are dealing with on this forum, mostly old men with toys; get a bit cranky when they haven't had a nap (its bloody worse when they try to crack jokes). :laugh3:
How can you get angry with such innocent chaps? :(  Aren't they cute, little temper tantrums, wander right off topic, etc. :-X
George is nice , Rob is nice , I'm ni.. (well I try to be).
Please reconsider. :)

Geoff, it would be very sad if you did go.  I don't like it when any member decides to leave as I feel like I have personally failed.  Hopefully you will reconsider.

Can everyone else just chill out.  I'm getting sick to death of petty arguments and people stirring the pot - which is really ruining the forum for me, as well as others I'm sure.  Let us just get along and enjoy the hobby, which is what this forum is for.  You ALL make this website what it is.  If there are problems then report them to me.

Thank you.

Cripes! :o
When exactly does the season of 'Peace & Goodwill to all' kick in?
It's all getting waaayyyyy too personal and I think it's time for some backing off and considering before committing to 'paper'.
It's not for me to comment on the reason(s) for Dave & Geoff deciding to leave although I'd much rather they didn't, but there are ways and means of getting 'humour' across and it can be very hit and miss.
If it carries on in this vein I'm sure it will be locked and that will just push folks further so I'd just ask everyone to calm down please.

Oops - sorry, Tank.
We must have hit the 'Post' button relatively same time

First of all I would like to thank you very much for your kind reply s, and Bealman if that was a joke you go the wrong way in showing it stating that you will close the thread then for another moderator stating it was out of sorts and gone to far, but hey people need to have a soap box to stand on sometimes and just talk about there experiences and I do not think it was offensive, some members only go on one forum to chat I know I am one that only used this forum for my much needed input of N Gauge model railways, I am a bit of a loner and yes sometimes maybe need to lighten up, I work in a place where there is only 3 of us and 4 days out of 5 I am on my own holding the fort to speak, I find it hard to get out with the way my wife is with her disabilities so I tend to put all of my spare time into my hobby when I can.

I am going to take a couple of days away from the forum to rethink what all of you have said, I have spent a few years on this forum and respect all of you, Tank I shall reconsider if to stay or not by the weekend.

Glad you are taking a few days off to consider the position, I hope it means we still be entertained by some of your posts in the future.

Geoff thanks for your PM I am very happy that you decided to stay on the forum.

Because of my weird Aussie  humour I feel respnsible for what has happened here, no man I know likes having a digital rectal examination so I just made a light hearted comment instead of going into details.

George you know that I helped you make the decision about becoming a moderator on this forum and I still have the PMs that we shared at the time.

As you know I was also  moderator on this forum and as such do not take the threat of having a thread locked lightly, having any thread locked is a hard thing to decide but having the threat of being responsible for having a thread like the Angry Thread with 225 pages is not funny.

If I need to be put in place for what I consider to be a harmless reply I would like it to come from Tank, in the meantime I will stay on as a forum member of this great forum.

Once again hang in there Geoff and thanks for the backup.

Point taken, gentlemen. You are both valued forum members and I am sincere when I say that I'm glad you are staying with us. Personally speaking, the issue is closed.

Let's get on with the forum! The old Model Railroader magazine catchphrase....

Model Railroading is fun!

Good to hear that everyone is staying. I was part of the thread concerned and admit I probably was close to the line too but hey, it wasn't anywhere near as off topic as some threads on here. Apologies if anything I said upset anyone. I believe this to be the best and most informative forum for my hobby and would be lost without it so I'm afraid you're stuck with me until the day I am withdrawn from service (or Tank throws me out). Oh and I promise to try not to mention anything which enters my ......................... No, let's not go there!

Anyway, I hope we're all friends again and I think we'll all probably think twice about whether a witty remark is likely to be taken the wrong way or not. Unfortunately as someone else said in this thread, sometimes the written word doesn't come over as well as the spoken word, or something to that effect.

Just like to add that banter, humour, irony and jokes are one of the toughest things to moderate - particularly with written words as there is no indication of facial expressions, tone of voice etc which would give the clues as to whether something is light-hearted or not. Smilies can help  :) but they are also open to mis-interpretation  :(

I can be 'picky Pengi'  :worried: because, as a Mod, we have a duty to be picky at times - particularly if there is something that is not family friendly or could break a law, e.g. copyright, libel etc.

With regard to moving posts, this is done with the aim of making it easier for our members to find and retrieve stuff. From time to time we do have a 'spring clean' of the forum.

As you will appreciate all this is often a fine judgement call, hopefully we have got the balance right and that we are not 'over-sanitising' the forum. If there are some of our actions that you do not understand or agree with, then feel free to report the post and we will look into it further.

Another point Pengi as a Moderator one has to and should show respect to the forum membership, I know how hard it is to moderate a forum as I have been a moderator on other forums including a camera forum which was a total headache , I think if a forum member steps out of line a PM can defuse an otherwise volatile situation , I remember this was done on several occasions during the early days on this forum, I might add I was not one of the recipients :claphappy:
