Well, I guess from the title you can guess what this is about. Love it or loathe it, that time of year will shortly be upon us and I thought what could I offer the forum members as a "Christmas gift". I decided upon a kind of advent calendar, with a picture a day being posted from my yard layout "Stewart's Lane", up until Christmas day.
I have only been a member of this fantastic forum since about half way through this year and I would like to thank everyone for the knowledge they have shared, the support they have given others (including myself) and the laughs that we've had.
The thread is essentially "topicless" (no, not topless ;D ) mods, so no wielding the big stick saying we must get back on topic, since there is no topic! :P It can be "banter galore" or as much of a bore as you so please - just don't get it locked! We can talk about VB beer, Vauxhall's from the seventies, IPA in pint form ... I'm game!
I'm sorry to say though, that the photos won't be very banter generating, but then I challenge you! Perhaps we can have a prize for best post at the end of December, any thoughts?
I'll caveat the pics now and say I'm not that knowledgeable about prototypical running so you might see things that offend you. If you do then just remember that it gives me pleasure, and that's all that really matters :D
On the 1st of December I give you ... 56076.
[smg id=19154 type=preview align=center caption="DSC 7939"]
Just want to say I've done at least two of the kits in your photo -- and your versions are so much better!
The Ratio pallets and barrels kit is a favourite of mine, but I never get the colour of the pallets right. But the way you've done them there -- perfect! Essential detritus for every layout, in my opinion.
Cheers, NeMo
Essential detritus indeed Herr NeMo, essential indeed!
Well, I would like thank you for your kind compliments Sir, I really would. The problem I have with that though, and it's a rather large one I'm afraid ... the problem is ... wait for it, how do I say it ... hmmm, I didn't actually build the layout :moony:
If this is the beginning of compliments for work well done, then I'll be :whisper: with the good man who built it and suggest he have a look at this thread. My interest is very much in UK built chassis restoration (I'm still learning) and this was a perfect opportunity to own something to enjoy the stock on.
I just wish I had the skills of this man. Perhaps more time :read: and less time :pint: would enable me to accomplish something half as good.
I'm glad you like the pic NeMo!
Dan
PS: there'll be plenty more detritus to come! Oh, I did add the Qantas & Ale billboards ;D
It doesn't matter who did what, it is still a nice piccy, by the way where did the MAN M2000 tractor unit come from I would like a couple for my layout.
Thanks Ditape, very kind of you. I've actually noticed that it's slightly out of focus  but hey ho ... there's plenty more to come :headbang:
I'm just popping out with Mrs Hound for a bite to eat (nothing fancy, don't worry) - I'll let someone guess where that MAN 2000 is from (I mean what make it is). If there's no reply by the time I get back then naturally I'll tell you. I'll buy the first correct answer a virtual beer :P ... or should I say, the first person to give the correct answer!
Cheers
Dan
There's that bloke in the blue trousers again!
He seems to have wandered off André-NL's layout and onto Stewart's Lane.
Is he a professional N gauge act-or? ;)

Now that's an Advent calendar I'd subscribe to!
Photos of the most unprototypical trains and liveries the photographer could come up with! Guaranteed to make Model Railway Journal readers cry! Featuring:
- GWR kettles with slightly wrong tenders!
- BR blue diesels with the wrong types of ventilation grilles!
- Southern electrics running on layouts without third rail!
- British roads modelled using continental road markings!
- And more...
Cheers, NeMo

Well it does AC, but I'll save that calendar for next year! Thing is, I wouldn't even have to go out of my way to get it wrong! How about a GWR Pannier, the one with the open top cab, pulling a single Virgin Mk3 buffet car, followed by a guard's van? Would that get you subscribing NeMo? :D
Jon - that's a winter scene alright, winter scene in the Middle East :nerner: The driver of the 56 got lost!
Come on guys ... has nobody put their hat in the ring for the virtual beer token yet? The MAN 2000 cab ... it's a gimme!

A Gimme. Let's see. Have I heard of them? :hmmm: Nope
Attempts at a Wickedpedia search for 'Gimme' didn't turn up anything either :(
Pure comedy Nobby - had to read it twice before you had me in stitches! Imagine rocking up at your local Iveco dealership ... "Yup - have you got any Gimme's in stock? I'll take two if you 'ave!"
Ok ok - apologies Ditape, we're gonna have to let this one run for another day. I'm sure tomorrow's picture will give the game away with regards to said tractor's origins. That beer token's gonna be worthless if ye guys don't claim it! ;D
Well all I can say is that the picture is cool 'cos there's a flying kangaroo in it.
Even though I don't fly QANTAS (me sister-in-law works for them) and I'd only be interested in a virtual Victoria Bitter :D
Did I mention that on the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me, a class 56 in a Pear Tree.

C'mon guys put Ditape out of his misery and tell him what the Gimme is! The beer's gone stale now by the way and any that hasn't has been drunk.
David Hasselhof realised that the scene wasn't quite Baywatch and has packed his Bindle, crossed the tracks and is making for the stage door. A fiver didn't quite cut it!

Ditape, I humbly apologise for labelling you one of us ale swilling, beer belly bulging monsters. Might I offer you a 125mm white wine token for the correct answer instead?
Then again ... you might like Ale
I will have a glass of white wine, oh and a glass of red as well.. :beers:

Careful Bealman, you might find your one-way ticket suddenly has a return coupon on it and your citizenship has been revoked if you bad mouth the national tipple like that!
Cue B757-236GT (one of our members for those of you wondering what I'm harking on about), we need you over here from the "Heavy Metal" thread. What say you about my chronological blunder with the Qantas Boeing 747-400 in the background of the BR Blue class 56? Did the two co-exist in a period of time? Methinks perhaps not - but methinks it must have been close!
Well I'm disappointed in you lot not guessing the make of the MAN 2000
Gimme Lorry.
The stale beer token is now being transferred to the first person who can spot the loco in Day 2's pic!
Only Me - is your MAN driven by Jensen Button? You've got slicks on yours! Certainly no use in a Christmas diorama :D
Dan
The loco can just be spotted inside the tunnel, looks like it has reached a dead end :worried:
cheers John.
First 747-438 delivered in july 1989 as VH-OJA. At that tme there were a few romanian 56s in blue 56004 being the best known but i know of 56010 withdrawn in 1992 and i think 56021 and 028 but i dont have my combines handy. 56004 was by that time rebuilt with later cabs and retained blue livery right through till withdrawel around 2000.

Qantas got their first Boeing 747-400 in August 1989, there are pictures of 56076 in Railfreight Redstripe livery dated 1988 ;)

Richard, our undisputed Heavy Metal encyclopedia, you Sir have made my day. So what you're saying then is that I'm chronologically correct, correct? I should have saved that Beer token for you!
Well, now that we can't use that as a chronological faux paux, can anybody spot anything else? I'm sure there'll be some in the coming days!
Thank you sir, I shall use it wisely :D
You are fine sir. VH-OJA is still going with Qantas now and apart from having the newer circus roo logo its still the same basic livery.

Especially for you Bob! Apologies if they are slightly out of focus, since it's late and I didn't set up the tripod, hence no depth of field. Also the Launceston has it's tender sitting less than true. Wouldn't win me a prize from Dave Bailey, but hopefully enough to keep you lot entertained ;D

A bit like the butcher who caught his bum in the bacon slicer, you've got behind in your deliveries, Dan :telloff:
Nice to see some steamers, though
Just a bit behind! I've just arrived in Manchester, collected 4000 lollipop sticks and a walkera gear puller! Not home till tomorrow night, when the pics will have to come thick and fast (on 24th I guess) to catch up for Xmas!

Where can we get a loco shed like yours from?
:thankyousign: Mark
Mark
This has just finished on ebay, but it's of the same design as my engine shed. This suggests to me that it most definitely is a kit.
