Title: need help with my storage
Post by: portland-docks on November 09, 2014, 09:25:03 PM
im currently using two storage boxes i got off ebay, carboard boxes with 5 foam trays in.

now the trays are fantastic, but the problem im having is, to carry them you use the handle on the side, which turns the box on its side. a piece of foam inside is meant to prevent any movement, but the box isnt staying shut properly leaving movement and thus my locos are turnign upside down or falling out the slots in the tray, which is now what i reckon to be the cause of my loco defects.

now what i would like to do, is use these trays and turn them into drawers.

turn each cardboard box into a set of drawers, which can be fitted on top of each other, and put on a trolley for exhibition purposes etc, but seperated for travel.

any ideas on how i can go about this?

Can you not put a handle on the other side and use both hands to carry it like a beer crate?

I would be tempted to go to one of the many cheapie show places with the measurements and look at plastic storage crates, Such as the really useful boxes range. I am sure something would be useful for the trays to stack in.

Other ideas -
Build a frame for the trays to convert them to a chest of drawers.
Depends on which trays you have bought, I have the blue foam ones from KR multicase and bought a large case for them which holds everything very safely!!

A friend of mine, Russ (on the forum) has bought a wheeled suitcase, one of those modern ones with a handle which slides out, this is the right dimensions to stack the trays inside and when zipped up keeps everyhting safe!

Best wishes
Simon

JB Model World is the place, John is the most helpful guy and has a huge range of boxes, believe he is away for a week or so but give him a try, does the show circuits.

Surely if the box isn't staying shut properly then you just need to address this. Does the box stay shut properly and your locos stay in place if you wrap something like a belt around the box and then lift it? If so then the box is okay - you just need to find a fix for securing it properly when it's being carried.

I agree George

Met Jon at a recent railway modelling exhibition and bought enough of his boxes with foam inserts to hold all my stock with some space to spare. Very good value as well.

He has even dropped off a couple boxes to my home when passing, won't get better service and the boxes are ace. Bob have you seen the service box he does? That is good also.

I'm not sure what the service box is George - can you elaborate please?

Same blue A4 case, inside is a cut out to accept a small plastic tray to put the screws etc you are working with, a slot cut out with about three thin foam strips to fit allowing an inverted loco or similar to be held safely upended, and he also makes a foam section with six cutouts to hold oil dispenser, paint pots, pens etc, will try and upload a photo later for you Bob. Think there is also a unit on the way to slot all the boxes into it.

Thanks George

Jon gave me one of the 6 cutout thingies for free and, would you believe I just bought a loco servicing sponge whatsit. Wish I'd known about this earlier. Still that's life innit.

The blue stacking mushroom crates ( from your local greengrocer) are an excellent holder for 2 of the foam trays, and can be stacked easily

Off to the local market at closing time!
