I am now building my small goods yard, I have laid the track. As I understand it they did not ballast a lot of sidings and I have read of building the level with the track. Can someone tell me, Is that level with the sleepers or the rails them selves. I am planning on using Woodland scenics scatter level to the track, I will probably build it up with card first of course.
In my opinion you just need to go up to the level of the sleepers - only big good yards had the track inset into cobblestones or concrete.
If I were you I wouldn't bother with scatter material. As you suggest I would surround the track with card of the appropriate thickness and finish with a layer of sand paper to give a textured finish.
Good luck !
Best regards,
Joe
Thanks for that Joe, I was planning on using card but after reading a Model Rail book I bought some air clay and plan on using that to the level of the sleepers has you suggested, with perhaps a little scatter in places after I have colored it.

In small goods yards level with sleeper tops. As has been said, unlikely to be ballast as per main lines, more likely to be mud/cinders and often rendering sleepers difficult to see. I have successfully (I think) used a filler like Polyfilla in goods yard areas to build up the level between rails and tracks, then paint with a mix of grubby earth colours and selectively apply flock/static grass in little used/overgrown corners of the yard.

thanks for that Roy sounds like what i am doing but clay instead of pollyfilla

Interesting as I would like to follow this idea. What kind of clay have you in mind, the Italian version of polyfilla has proved to be a disaster but I have seen DAS modelling clay around.
Jerry
Hi jerry, the clay I am using is called "air clay", I saw it in the Model Rail Build a Model Railway book. The stuff they had was by Hornby, but mine is Hobbycraft's own stuff. I do tend to avoid Hobby Craft after once being ripped off but I am not going off another rant now....he..he. I will post pics when I have tried it, I am at present waiting for the track paint to dry.
