Title: Identifying new purchases?
Post by: Tom@Crewe on August 30, 2014, 06:44:10 PM
A colleague's father had a N gauge railway years ago, I mentioned to my colleague that I was building an N gauge layout and he asked his dad if he had anything left he did not want. Well it took him a few days to find them but what a haul.

43 Wagons - I have been able to identify all (some are wrong period but can be repainted)
12 Coaches - Again I have been able to identify them.
9 Locomotives - He say some are not working but should be easy to fix. (as when they stopped he could not fix them so just put them away)

All for £25 he would not accept any more, I did try. All wagons, coaches and loco's are very dusty and in need of a good clean

However its the Locomotives I need help on. I cant identify any catalogue numbers, One I cant make out make or number.

I made a little table of missing info.

Some of the locos are older and lack detail and for use on my layout I would need to convert them to DCC, So I am not sure what to do! Keep them, convert them if that is at all possible, sell on, ????? what to do!

The LMS red thing is a Farish GP. Stands for general purpose. Not based on a real loco.
Good find tho for 25ukp.

Hope this helps.

Great scoop!

The one you can't make out is an older looking Graham Farish 94xx Pannier Tank.

The 4F, Jinty and GW Prairie all look to be more recent models as they have finer blackened wheels.

I believe all Farish steam locos can be chipped with modifications to the chassis involving a "digi hat" to isolate the bottom motor brush, but there are others on this Forum much more knowledgeable than me on DCC matters.

Regards

Roy

The top one, the 'Patriot', may be from a D&M (?) kit, which AFAIK, are now long out of production. I think they issued a number of kits at the time.
The Minitrix Ivatt 2-6-2 tank is easy to chip; I recently did one using a TCS Z-scale decoder in the bunker, and added lead shot/liquid lead to just about any space there was. The loco will now haul eight modern Farish Mk1s with ease, 12 with some slipping. There was an article in the N-gauge Society 'Journal' which I followed for the chipping, but if you have done some before, it is relatively easy to work out what goes where.
As Roy said, the Farish locos can all be chipped after isolating the lower brush with a Digi Hat; see DCC Supplies website for details

If you want to fill in some gaps in the list:-

The 8F number 8177 is Farish catalogue number 1901
The General Purpose tank number 16389 is Farish catalogue number 1701
The 08 number D4019 is Farish catalogue number 1005
The Minitrix 2-6-2T loco number 41234 is an Ivatt 2MT tank and is Minitrix catalogue number 51 2040 00

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for all the information some of which led me to the rest I needed. Updated Table.....

I am now thinking the earlier 3 are quite crude (and GP is not a real loco) So I will clean and check they are in good order then move them on.

Lady Godiva. This cast is crude and has some repairable damage and bending. Dr Al tells me its on a Farish Black 5 Chassis so I am thinking of converting it back (bodies and tenders are relatively cheep). Was the same running gear use on other classes?

Clean, repair and chip the rest.

This running gear was only used under the Black 5 - the chassis block is common to all the Farish steam, but the wheels and valve gear arrangement are specific to the Black 5.

I have D4019 repaired now.

One more question on the Black 5. Will I have to find the donor model catalogue Number and get the appropriate body or is there only one type fits all years??

All metal bodies will fit (the new tool Black 5 has a plastic body so easy to identify).

Best,
Alan

I might be mistaken, but weren't bacfar flogging off cast bodies at TINGS a couple of years ago. They had hundreds of what might have been red standard fives. I think they were selling them for a pound. I might have bought a couple even. I'll check later maybe.

Cheers

If you want to change the patriot back to black 5 I have spare body & tender ( chassis gone to make Beyer Garrett) & would be happy to swap

Lady Godiva has settled into her new home and can be seen "streaking" through Cromford with a Manchester-London express
Thanks Tom
