Title: N Gauge Streamlined GWR Railcar Kickstarter project with DJ Models

Streamlined Great Western Railcar in N Gauge

In an exciting "first" for British N Gauge, Matthew Pinto has teamed up with Dave Jones of DJ Models to produce the streamlined Great Western railcar. Introduced in 1934, these stylish vehicles were used for light express duties such as the Birmingham - Cardiff service. Over the years, they migrated widely and could be seen on most parts of the GWR and WR system.

The model will be based on Railcar number 4 which is now preserved at the Steam Museum in Swindon. This will be laser-scanned to produce an accurate detailed model of a prototype that has never before been available ready-to-run. The model will be designed to the highest standard of RTR production and will incorporate current best practice.

The specification will include:

•   Coreless motor with underfloor drive mechanism.
•   6-pin DCC decoder socket with space for DCC speaker.
•   Directional lighting.
•   Darkened profile RP25.72 wheels.
•   Fully detailed 'art deco' interior.
•   Different cab layouts for each end correctly represented.
•   Guard's pigeon holes and raised passenger floor areas.
•   Optional bogie valances.

Another first for British N Gauge will be the use of KickStarter to fund the development of the model. In countries such as America and Australia, it is common for manufacturers to take subscriptions for models. Those models will only be produced once the minimum number of orders has been received. This is the first time this subscription-based approach has been used in Britain.

Using KickStarter will allow us to offer this unique and exciting model in the same way. Subscription will be open for 60 days and customers will have that amount of time to sign up. Using a well-known commercial site like KickStarter provides security for the customers. No money will be taken until the subscription period is complete. If we fail to raise the minimum number of orders necessary then the project will not proceed and no money will debited from the customers' accounts.

The price will be £115.00 which will include shipping within the UK. Customers from outside the UK are welcome for a small additional shipping charge. The minimum number of orders to make this project viable is 1000. The railcars will be available in the following liveries.

•   No 4 in GWR "Shirtbutton" livery with white roof (as originally produced and worn currently in preservation).
•   No 3 in post-war GWR "Hawksworth" livery with grey roof and GWR crest.
•   No 2 in BR Crimson and cream livery branded W2W.

DJ Models will offer these models with excellent after-service including 1-year warranty, 100% spares available at launch and each model will be individually tested before dispatch.

To order a railcar, visit the KickStarter project site.

Hi Matt

Great choice of model. Pledge duly made for one.

I would like BR "Carmine and Cream", but can't see where I pick. I assume livery choice comes later once funding target is reached?

Roy

Hi Matt

Brill, thank you for confirming.

I will make sure I mention this at my Club tonight, I suspect there may be two or three who this project may be of interest to.

I am sure you have plans for raising the profile of the project - do these include flyers on "friendly" traders' stands at TINGS?

Obviously we know there is another high profile "Kickstarter" currently in gestation that has been discussed both here and at the "Other place", but as it is for a completely different model from a totally different era I personally see no harm in having flyers for both on the same stands of any who are willing.

Regards

Roy

Hi Matthew

Attempting to pledge but KS is being a tad slow. Have you grabbed ALL the entire Sky bandwidth for your terrific project?  :D

I would be in but I can't risk the money until Ive seen the quality and reliability of the proposed future products from DJM announced last year I have wanted a streamlined Railcar for years I used to sit on the drivers knees in one on the Henly on Thames branch when I was about 5 years old,I'm now 67 and my pension doesn't  stretch to gamble £115 even though that seems a good price.
If it was a Farish model then I might be able to persuade her in doors and the family to buy one for Christmas or Birthday.

I've taken the chance and pledged, just hope Dave can come up with the goods.   I will need it shipping to a different address to my card holder address, hope that can be done.

Will the model be DCC fitted or at least easily adapted, with a six pin plug for example?  I'm keen to get my hands on one, but these days I stick to DCC and don't want to have something that is a nightmare to convert.

It's not something I would personally want but I'm sure there will be many people who will jump at the chance. I do really hope this is a success, as on the back of this more models could be announced. Wishing you the best of luck guys.

Hi Ben,

Yes, I certainly hope so. It remains to be seen if the British modellers are ready to embrace commission production but I am hopeful. The combination of an iconic prototype and a (fairly) reasonable price will help it to fly.

If this project succeeds, it could herald a new model (no pun intended) of manufacturing and open the door to many other possibilities.

Hi Matthew,

I really wish you good luck with this and look forward to seeing the project succeed. There must be a lot of GWR fans who would jump at the chance to have one of these iconic railcars on their layout.

When I update my links page, I'll include a plug on the ERG Website.

now to work out how to squeeze in a heritage railway / or consider a railtour for this :)

Well, No4 is preserved. It has not been out of the museum for a while but it probably could do a Railtour with the appropriate mechanical work. No need to stretch Rule #1 too far. ;)

I really wish that i could support this, as I would really really like one.

But due to my main period of modelling being 2000 WCML. My current, pretty much non-existant, budget is tied up in the penodlino project.

Hope that it goes well for you and im hoping that it does go well and a second run is done when I have some more money available.

I wish you well with the project - I am sure it will be a great success.

Unfortunately [as far as I can establish]  the railcars allocated to the Wye Valley branch all had the later Swindon built bodies. The usual  workhorse was W30W and I'll keep an eye on the second hand offerings - I might be able to pick up a GWR or Green version if I can't find an early BR.

Hi Cycletrak9, get yourself one of these (W2W) and I will swap for a Farish Swindon built railcar.  It's sat on the layout in GWR livery.   ;)

Yours, wishfully thinking, Delfin

p.s. I have already pledged for one and will be reserving the GWR shirtbutton livery.  :)

Been looking at this ever since you announced it Mathew and wish you every success.

I think you are very adventurous in attempting this especially as you will effectively need 1000 advance orders.

Well I've counted my pennies taken DEEP breath and hit the pledge button, after all it is a GWR icon and I am after a shirtbutton version.

I look forward to receiving my reward in what around 18 months?

DJ Models have unveiled the EP for their first locomotive, a 00 gauge J94 saddle tank. This helps to give an indication of the quality of work we will be able to expect on the Railcar.

Gosh that J94 looks good Matt.
D.J. keeps good links (P.R.) with modellers on here and other forums. The proof of the pudding is, in our case, how the model turns out.
If the models come up trumps and within a reasonable time of their expected arrival, he will be IMHO onto a sure winner.

You wouldn't have to pay until the target amount is reached, Mick and nothing if it doesn't make it.

I agree that the target seems to be a way off but I'm I'm in and it would grand if it did come to fruition.

Hello,

We are down to the last day for the Kickstarter for the N Gauge GWR Streamlined Railcar. We still have a way to go to reach the target and fund this project so if you have not already done so, please pledge now to try and get this iconic train into production

I really wish I could help with this project but as the pendolino project is on the horizon I can't afford to do both and the modern era is more my time.

It's a big shame as I would have liked one for a future project that keeps getting thought about.

I really Hope that this project does come off and you have a big surge in the last 24 hours.

Irrespective of how things end up I think the GW Railcar is a great prototype choice and it is a well put together proposal.

I have just doubled my pledge to two railcars, but the hurdle just looks too great, sad to say.  If a miracle doesn't happen and the project fails, I hope it can be revisited if/when the concept of crowd funding is more established in railway modelling.

Well, the Kickstarter has finished without reaching its target alas.  :'( I may try again in a couple of years time when Dave has some models out and people are satisfied with his quality. Also if any of the current Kick-starters get off the ground, it might give people a bit more confidence about the platform as a whole as a way of funding model railway development.

Thanks to everyone on here who supported the project, sorry we did not reach our target.  :thankyousign:
