My current addiction stemmed from modelling the US scene where you had to pounce when something you really wanted was released because they didn't hang around for long.  "New issue of Montana Rail Link 3 bay hoppers due from Intermountain? Better pre-order 18 of them just in case!"  This was a new experience after the Farish years of always being able to go along to your local model shop and buy a blue 25, large logo 50,  etc, no matter how long ago they were first released.  It looks like the current UK scene is going the same way as the US scene though hence the abundance of block freight trains I hadn't really planned on and while appraising my collection a few weeks ago I realised for the first time in my life that I actually had a shortage of motive power which I never thought I'd be able to say.

Now, what are we going to call this disease of ours? I like the term someone used the other day ... "Diseasels"!

It was originally coined by the Rev. Awdry, in a book called "Main Line Engines" -- "Coughs and sneezles spread diseasles". Obviously it's a play on the old "coughs and sneezes spread diseases" public information film.

Cheers, NeMo

Thanks for that NeMo, great term. I think my line in the sand will be that with the Poole stock I won't duplicate (other than those I've already duplicated). That should make it manageable and plenty to pick up on the cheap as and when they surface and funds permitting.

You think you have a problem  Try mine, so far I have 23 steam locomotives of various types and 3 diesels + 2 EMU's.
18 coaches and 24 goods wagons. 2 x engine sheds (to make 1 long one), turntable, station buildings plus line side accessories.
Enough buildings for a small town. 6 x half lengths of straight track + 4 sets of points.

As of yet I have no layout (not even started one yet) :laugh3:

Hey , listen , wait until you've been collecting stuff for 12 years ! Over 100 DCC locos , 50/60 coaches , 120 (ish) goods wagons . All to go on a big shed layout which I've been working on for 10 years , still only half finished .....but runnable as it is . At least I've started working on the main terminus platforms etc again . OOOOOOPS !! Ric

I think a small minority of us would say 'I have just enough stock for my layout' whereas the majority of us fall into the 'I haven't got enough' or 'I have too much' :hmmm:
Me? If I see something new that fits my layout's era/location I'll buy it, purely because I don't want to lose out should there not be a second run :worried:
I'm also slowly but surely replacing my Mk1's with Blue Riband versions but it does mean I have hordes of others to sell off ;)
There is no way I can justify all my stock but I do run 2 separate eras so placate my wallet with that thought and, as I don't take holidays (being retired and having let my passport lapse), while I can afford this hobby I will continue in the same vein :laugh3:

I'm relieved I am not alone with this diesel disease.
Almost 40 Steam & Diesel locos (I daren't actually count), a couple hundred coaches and wagons, although they do cover a couple of distinct Eras.
However, layout still being built and far from complete, just left with a small test track play with to test my locos on
But like Nobby I'm still after a couple of more locos, just in case they sell out and don't do a rerun.
Yes N Gauge is addictive!

Say £50 per loco and £10 per truck/coach gives about four grand!

However compared with Bigrics's fleet it's a fleabite.

And I thought I was extravagant with four Peco DIY brake vans!

Hi everyone, I'm David, and I have can addiction.

I can't stop buying Diesel Hydraulics. :'(

I try to give up, but everytime I think I have my addiction beat, bam, I see one and think, 'another can't hurt, I can give up anytime I want to', but I can't.

Yesterday a blue warship got delivered, and for a while I felt alive, but today I feel so dirty. One day, one day I'll, I'll............buy a 47!

I already have a collection of US stuff and have already started with the German stuff (that's gonna be expensive...).

Expensive hobby this !

Try modelling all over the world, after over 30 years of n scale ( my mum and dad bought me first n gauge when I was about 12) and 16 years in Canada, I have over 100 locos from 3 continents...

That said I've now learned to resist a little, as much as I love so many railroads, I do try and restrict my North American stuff to CN and CP

I think resistance comes with time :)

Having just rediscovered this hobby, I've acquired 7 powered units (5 EMUs of varying designs) and two locomotives in the last couple of weeks. Need to hold off a bit until I get the layout built, and I'm going to restrict myself to the number of units which can be stabled on the layout. Good thing I like lots of points and sidings...  :hmmm:

Moreover, I've discovered a new financing method with health benefits - work stress got me into a bad snacking/energy drink habit, but by cutting those out and putting the money I would have spent into a savings box, methinks there is money to be had, which is already in the vicinity of funding an entire coach (though I'll hold out until I can get something with a motor in it)

That is a good idea and as you say will have health benefits as well

One of our members has financed his addiction to n gauge by giving up smoking and using the cash saved to buy rolling stock etc.

cheers John.

That is Ian of layout "Ashdon"
Ian had a great idea to record his N gauge expenditure vs previous cigarette expenditure, a brilliant strategy.
Unfortunately both Ian and his wife Josie have health problems, and Ian does not post so much these days.

Hi Ian....can you drop us a note to let us know how you & Josie are coping.

Kind wishes,
Tom U.

The best cure I have found is to work out how long it will take to clean all the wheels, superdetail and weather your current stock.

Bachmann are working on the second half of the cure - 25% price rises  :D

You don't *need* a lot of stock for most layouts. In fact one reason many older layouts were small branch lines was not just space but also because buying a 2nd locomotive was once an extravagance!

Totally agree. However, I must admit to have succumbed of late to things like a Blue Pullman and a new Deltic... both of which would never have been in the same neck of the woods together, but, Rule 1.....

The addiction has never really bitten me.  I suppose it's due to the fact that the layout spends most of its time broken down in the attic.  Only being assembled for the odd weekend.

I also have storage issues in the staging area.  I can't store all the trains 'On Track'.  Once I move the layout into the Man Cave where it will be assembled semi permanently, and can address the storage issue, we'll see what happens then..

Of course, it being a North Kent line layout and me not really being a 'Rule 1' kind of person - The right type of EMU can only come in kit form (hoping someone will do a kit) and the freight is Class 59, 66 & 73 handled so there isn't a lot of opportunity for addiction....

Now, when's that Brighton Belle becoming available?

Good question addressed on another thread.

I'm only 50% Rule 1... I don't mix Eras but I do mix regions.  :-[
