While I support your post, I think the first sentence could have been reworded to
something like "Scotland isn't leaving" as the original has a sort of double entendre... :D

I always thought that the UK was a place just north of Tasmania. Oops that's Australian mainland. Sorry.  ;)

Fascinating thread. I can't help but think that even if the Scots stay put, they really should find a way of getting the Welsh a bit of exposure in the flag. I know the dragon would make things a tad busy, but at least it would stop people flying the union flag upside down!!!

The Welsh are in the flag already, hence the diagonal red lines ;)

I believe you will find that the Red Diagonal Cross is the red cross of St Patrick (Northern Ireland).  The main reason Wales is not represented on the flag is the fact that Wales was alreday 'In Union' with England when the union with Scotland was formed and the Union Flag was adopted in 1606.

No one has mentioned the Manx or Cornish flags yet, That would really complicate things.

Incidentally , when I was in the Scouts years ago, we were always taught
that the Union Jack had to be flown so that the left hand broad white part
was below the red diagonal, and to fly it upside down was a sign that that
a ship was in distress.

That always sounded unlikely, as if in a naval battle and your ship
was sinking, another ship could make out a tiny part of a flag through
all the smoke and flames, assuming there was enough wind to
make the flag flutter.

IIRC the diagonal red lines are for [Northern] Ireland. When the Union Jack Flag was created England and Wales were considered one entity. 300+ years later, differing views and political construction of the UK should prompt a rethink and reworking of the flag, to at least bring in the green from the Welsh flag, something I would support...

So have they given any thought to a new name for what's left of the country once we get our independence? The country formally known as the United Kingdom, or will it just simply be Britain.

If there's a yes vote the UK will become Scotland and England,
whatever the flags and titles of the countries become.
England will include Wales and Northern Ireland which will
be minor constituents of the remainder of the UK.

Indeed, Wales was and is a Principality.

No  it is not. It's a country. It's not been a principality for a very very long time.

On "Countdown", Richard Osman defines a country as a sovereign state which is a
member of the UN.

Presumably he is not a Welshman..... :D
