Poll
Question: Which do you recommend for my children?
Option 1: Thomas the Tank Engine
Option 2: Chuggington
Title: Thomas or chuggington

I don't let the twins watch too much telly, but both of these are of course allowed. But which is best? Probably a bit of a no brainer, I suppose.

Cheers

The worst thing about Thomas was Ringo Starr's narration. He was reading from the script and it sounded like it.

No one asked for your criticism of Mr Starr, the question was which is best.

Any more of this behavior George and I will have to report you to the boss  >:D   :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing:

This appears under the real railway discussion! Some mistake surely, real trains don't have
Scouse accents.

I wondered how long it would take?
Actually I expected the mod police to place it somewhere else.

Not many votes yet. The twins are beginning to get restless.

I used to love Thomas as a kid, but I don't like the new series so much.

Yup the books are pretty scary.  You're drawn into the belief that engines are people, they have happy smiley faces and talk. Then in a later book, there's a terrifying picture of an engine about to be cut up with a gas axe as the other railway decommissions all its steam engines.

And if mechanical genocide isn't enough, there's also the story of the old narrow gauge engine that was forgotten about for half a century and left buried in a shed. Don't read that one to the kids when grandma is around.

It has to be taken into account that all of these later characters were not around in the original books by Rev. Awdrey. Those books contained some amazing art.

I tried to salvage my originals, but, over the years, a combination of time and the fact I live on the other side of the planet has defeated me in that regard.

Thomas and Ringo do it for me. The 'new' Thomas series is rubbish in comparison.
Chuggington is just cartoon rubbish as far as I can see

Chuggington is a no-brained pastiche of Thomas the tank engine. 1980s (Ringo Starr era) Thomas is clearly the best as the railway has a clearly defined, purposeful infrastructure and its not all about being nice and the 'try to be a good friend' type B-S children have been spoonfed since the 90s.

Based of course on reality.. 8)

Awdry is far from perfect.. engines are male , coaches female etc.. and lots of moralising. Awdry wasn't above scary certainly - the publishers made him add the story about Henry being let out of the tunnel !

I'd forgotten that one. An engine that has psychological issues about getting wet in the rain gets bricked up in a tunnel!

I kinda liked that Henry story... even have it in photobook story form and used to read it to me daughters when they were little. They are both very successful young women these days, so they suffered no harm.

Anyway Henry deserved it, I reckon. Arrogant loco.  ;D

Thomas.  I think it's the best thing that Ringo Starr ever did!  Going off topic slightly but I'll accept the slap.  I heard that in an interview a journalist asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world.  Apparently the reply came back, and my money is on Lennon, was that he wasn't even the best drummer in the band!

To continue with the  :offtopicsign: reference ...

Back in the mid/late 60s, I understand Lennon & McCartney went to see another band in London that was starting to have some success.  After the gig, they went back-stage & told the drummer (who has since been heralded as the "loudest drummer in rock") that "there's no way our guy could do half of that" ...

Yeah, but Henry was in the tunnel at the time...

And Ringo arrived late for their one and only Aus tour...

I think they're all great stories :) It's just a shame that the modern versions have been sanitised so dramatically. Fortunately the originals still appear to be in print (I got mine as the box set of all the books).

on the   :offtopicsign: of Ringo. It's a good thing that none of the Beatles were particularly over technical instrumentalists (not to be confused with technically excellent instrumentalists). Having been involved with bands who had guitarists, keyboard players, bass players and drummers all competing to do the most technical solos and introduce ever more stupid chord progressions to the song writing process I think the Beatles wouldn't have been half as good at songwriting if they'd spent too long learning to play first.

If Paul McCartney hadn't become the bass player purely because no-one else wanted to do it, they might have just been Level 42 ;)

Tough one!

Both are very well made programs but my own preference would be for Thomas...the pre-CGI version because while it retains a lot of the character and charm of the original it just "don't look right" !

Chuggington is OK but is just like so many kids recent kids programs...no originality and treats the kids like fools!

I will ask the same question of a five year expert on the topic later today!

Pre-CGI Thomas has to win, I think. But I have a bone to pick with Ringo Starr, because now whenever I read the books to my boys James's voice always comes out sounding like Steven Gerrard....

Thomas, despite the clearly hideous safety record on Sodor railways.

Chuggington spend half their time air borne (i have a 5 year old daughter so have to watch) and multi-storey depots.

It is a total bag of :poop: , CGI at that.

Bit biased me  :)

"No, I'm selling dragons!"

"Ooooh, I bet they're expensive...!"
