I've recently got hold of some Tomytec cranes, with 'extending' booms, but they are moulded in the extended position.
I want to medel them with booms partly extended, rather than full height, but I wonder how the booms extend, and needless to say not a crane in sight when you need to look at one >:(
so the question is, when the booms extend, does the wider one extend fully first, then the next larger section etc with the last, thinest, section with the cable pulleys etc, only extending at full reach ?
thanks in advance for any info you may be able to provide.

Just done a quick 'google' - will these pictures help :-\
[smg id=12205]

It seems that, depending on manufacture design, the action can vary.

that's the type of boom I mean, but looking at them I'd guess they are fully extended, unless all sections extend at the same time in the same proportion :hmmm:
many thanks for the photo, what did you use as the search term ?
cheers

Used 'extending crane booms' in 'Google Images'

A quick look at youtube showed a similar though smaller crane with the same rectangular sections.
The end sections didn't come out until the sections nearer the cab were fully extended.
many thanks,
I tried lorry mounted cranes and seemed to get mainly hiab types, but did find this one
http://www.less-co2.co.uk/image-gallery.asp?gallery=Endurance%20E-3120%20Wind%20turbine%20installation%20East%20and%20West%20Ash%20Farm%20-%20Devon#Gmap (http://www.less-co2.co.uk/image-gallery.asp?gallery=Endurance%20E-3120%20Wind%20turbine%20installation%20East%20and%20West%20Ash%20Farm%20-%20Devon#Gmap)[iframes]/27/
which seems to confirm that the boom extends from the base end, the smaller sections extending after the larger ones have.
many thanks oldun and agrippa :beers:
