Title: The British Pullman
Post by: portland-docks on April 02, 2014, 04:42:58 PM
now im sure there is more than just me, who is fascinated by the British Pullman, aka The Orient Express, that runs from london victoria.

and if anyone is still unsure, here is a photo of the elegance im on about...

now im wondering, how can this be accuratly recreated?

i imagine it will involve quite a few of BH enterprises pullman kits, but how many? and how is the train set out? im sure there is an expert somewhere on here who knows this train quite well!

also, the locomotive pretty much glued to this train is Clan Line....now later this year Clan Line will be available, but as a spam can! so whats the next best? i imagine it will be something along these lines?...

now a modern version could be redone using the mk1 pullmans, but it wont be the same as that. the old farish ones are close, but being timbered bodied, its still not the same, so im still assuming bh enterprises is the best option for them?

And also some detail changes because there has been a certain amount of modernisation of the stock such as replacing the pullman bogies with non-authentic but probably rather smoother riding Gresley ones - does make modelling them easier as you can use RTR bogies.

Several of the coaches have had other changes too - including in the reverse direction - replacing BR era square bog windows with the original pullman oval design.

The baggage cars are of course Mark 1 stock in pullmanish livery so easy (unfortunately the old one they had which was an LNER one was banned by safety changes on the rules for wood bodied stock)

The generator coach conversion sides are also available.

If I was building them I'd be very tempted to look at building the coaches using clear plastic and vinyl sides with all the lining, crests and detail on them, perhaps some kind of 3D print/vinyl setup. I guess we'll know how well that works once the Devon Belle is done.

well the bh enterprises brake end i have, just requires some vinyls sides to be all honest. and already has gresley bogies i think.

so if the rest are the same it shouldnt be too difficult, as it does have the oval bog windows on my coach.

but if i were to buy the rest of the coaches, i would probably just go for vinyl sides to go straight onto the metal sides.

im sure adam at electra said if i sent him the sides from this he would have a go at creating vinyls for them for future use. worth a shot

I don't think the BH Enterprise sides are the right Pullmans to be honest. It'll actually become easier to model, when Hornby (Arnold) bring out their Brighton Belle. The British Pullman (VSOE) uses a good number of former Brighton Belle coaches, so really the only vehicles that will want modifying from RTR are the generator and support coaches. I think that to match the Pullman coaches, it would be better to use blue ribband coaches rather than vinyls. Don't get me wrong, vinyls look OK when in a solid rake of coaches that have all been made the same way, but in with contemporary RTR stock their complete lack of detail relief stands out too much. More often than not the donor Mk1 coach is a very poorly detailed obsolete coach that takes a hell of a lot of work to get close to current RTR standard.

The Generator is pretty simple ~ Choc Cream Mk1 BG with the large inset vents cut in place of one set of doors, B4 bogies and brake wheel added to the chassis with some additional under body boxes added. Livery wise the choc cream only really needs the chocolate either extending around the coach ends (or repainting with umber to match the BB coaches from Arnold) and the roof repainting.

Mk1 baggage car 11 ~ Again a Choc Cream Mk1 is likely to be the best starting point, the third window from the toilet end on each side needs blanking. You could probably cheat and take the glass out of this window, file off the ventilator detail and paint it cream, then refit. Then its as per the Generator car livery wise.

Mk2 support coach ~ repainted Mk2 BSO as per above.

Audrey, Gwen and Vera are ex Brighton Belle service vehicles

Car no. 86, 92, 93 and Mona are likewise but I didn't think they were in service ?

There she is! Wonder if the body would fit on the new spam can chassis?
