Food for thought about perfection

QuoteHi All

I've been on this forum for over 3-1/2 years and have learned a lot, but have almost no models to show for it because my goal was to do everything right the first time.  No layout, no models, nothing.  Because I thought my efforts wouldn't be good enough I kept waiting till I learned more.

Why the whining!

Two months ago yesterday, I was being trucked to the hospital due to a series of major strokes which left my left side useless.  One of the doctors told me I would probably walk and talk in time, but she had no hope for my left arm and hand.  Well, thanks to the good LORD and His rehabbers, I am back at work - walking and talking well enough to work.  And my left arm and hand is showing some movement.  As one of nurses said - "thank Jesus you are right handed".  But I was told that things will never be as good as they used to be.  I am typing this one-handed the old hunt and peck method.

So the moral of the story is - like Lance said - do what you can do today and be content knowing that it's the best you can do today and you will get better with practice.  I don't know what I will be able to do in the future, but it will be a lot harder and take a lot more time than it ever did before.  I'm sure in time I will find or make tools to do the holding my left hand should be doing, but things will a lot harder.

So don't wait like I did - you never know what is around the bend.  And of course, your prayers will be appreciated.

Have heard of people collecting all the bits and pieces for a model railway that they will build when they are retired only to find that they don't make it to retirement.

A late friend was a really talented engineer and built live steam locos, his wife always used to say that she wasn't worried about him keeping occupied when he retired. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and had to give all his live steam locos away. He eventually built a 00 layout with help from a professional layout builder. He managed to do some modelling and kit building in the early hours of the morning when for some reason his tremors weren't too bad.

So I suppose the moral of the story is do some modelling now however modest because you never know what the future holds.
